cd 28 listing?

Post by Ben schifano »

My 1975 CD28 is listing 5 degrees to port. I have no explanation for this. Does anyone have any ideas as to why? I know the fuel tank is on the port side, and the sewage tank is on the port side, but I can't recall ever noticing the list. My wife says i'm crazy, that I just didn't notice it before. I really hope that's the case. Any help would be appreciated....thanx

5° List To Port

Post by Oswego John »

Ben,

I doubt that the list is an inherent flaw in the boats design. More than likely, the list is man made. You are going to have to carefully check the placement of anything that has significant weight to it.

The weight has to be pretty much equalized, port and starboard. Not only the moderately full waste water tank and the loaded fuel tank, but attention must be paid to battery(ies), tool boxes, refrigerant ice, full ice box, potable water, anchor(s), chain, packed seabags and anything else that, when stowed, could throw the ship off balance.

Either that, or put a lift in your left Sperry Topsider. :D

My '79 CD28 has water tanks under the saloon settees. They are 30 gallons each as I recall. If one is full and the other near empty, that will put in a noticeable list. So will a wind on the beam if you're tied up in a slip.

same thing - 5 degrees or so. problem is, the table's on that side, the battery is on that side, the head is on that side, the stove's on that side, the slide out bunk (half a sheet of 1/2 inch ply, the cabinet seems deeper on that side, etc.

This past weekend, after recently removing the slide out ply, loading up for a july 4th cruise, I had 80 lbs of ice in the icebox, and for the first time ever, it looked straight up and down.

I guess the trick is to load up on beer

;-)

Matt

ps - OJ - he'd need that lift in the RIGHT topsider.....

25D list

Post by Dick Barthel »

The last two seasons I did not fill the water tank under the starboard settee and I have enjoyed a noticable list to port. When the boat is empty except for the batteries in the port lazerette that is the natural state. I'm hoping the problem will be gone by adding water. Or if I store some heavy stuff in the quarterberth.

OJ,

It's well known that pirates would saw the end of their peg legs to accomodate the heeling effect of the prevailing winds.

5° List To Port

Post by Oswego John »

Neil,

Yea, verily. I'll drink to that statement.

As a matter of fact, I witnessed Cap'n Pucebeard The Pirate when he returned to port here in Oswego last winter after spending a harrowing seven months on the main.

Because of overcompensating for alternating tacks, when they carried him down the gangway here in Oswego, he reminded me of Toulouse Lautrec.

All is right with Cap'n Pucy now. He went to Home Depot and lucked out on new prothesis'. Got 'em on sale.

But you win some and you lose some. Poor Cap'n Pucebeard now wears an eyepatch over his right eye.

It seems that a bug flew into his eye and Pucey forgot that he has a hook attatched to his wrist where his hand used to be.

Aaaarrrghh, :D

Is this a constant or do you only lean over at low tide?

Seriously, you can be assured that the hull is symetrical. If the mast is straight, that's not the cause of the list. No doubt it's stowage, either permanent or temporary. Fuel tanks and batteries are hard to move, but canned goods, beer, tools and the like are easy to relocate.
