1977 CD 28, Hull 120 for Sale. Donate to Mass Maritime?

Post by BarbofCapeCod »

Has any one ever donated a boat to Mass Maritime? I'm thinking about it at this point.

Kudu has been listed for over half a year. Any suggestions on how to sell her? I set the price at $15K at the broker's suggestion. Then lowered it to $10K. Is that too low? Is it just a bad market? Has anyone looked at her? She's a great boat in great shape for her age.

Should I list her on Ebay or Craigs list (not sure if I can with the broker involved)? Or donate her? Or just wait?

Thanks.

1977 Cape Dory 28, Hull 120, Kudu (formerly Celtic Ray), priced dropped to $10K!

She loaded with sails. My husband Bill outfitted her for cruising: new large holding tank, new Cape Horn self-steering gear, rewired electrical with new electrical panel. We had all the desk leaks fixed and rebedded lifelines plus more. We had such plans to sail her up and down the New England coast.

Sadly Bill died unexpectedly last summer, a year after we bought Kudu. And a boat without her captain is proving too sad for my family.

She's in storage at Parker's Boat Yard in Cataumet MA. Call Bruce at 508-563-9366. Email me with any questions Bruce can't answer. See Parker's web site for photos.

If this boat was in San Diego I would buy it in a heart-beat. The price seems very fair to me unless there is something wrong.

Hi Barbara -

I think you'll find a buyer at this price. 10K seems to be right about the baseline for 28's that are not projects. KUDU looks to be in nice condition. The cape horn windvane (in particular) and also the sails and the electrical upgrades all add value and suggest that Bill took good care of her. KUDU looks like a good deal at this price.

Sailingtexas.com (despite the name it is a national site) runs free ads and might attract a slightly different demographic than the yachtworld ads. I'd be cautious about selling on ebay -- you might find it more of a hassle than you need.

Sorry to hear that you aren't holding on to her.

Good luck to you and your family,

Matt

Make sure you list your CD on this message board AND post a reply to it every 2 weeks or so to keep it near the top of the board where it'll be seen. You can do that until you sell it.

And, don't forget to check back for replies to your posting since many folks post replies rather than sending you an email, a PM or giving you a phone call. Speaking of PMs, don't forget to check them too!

Good luck with your sale,
Cathy

Hi Barb, i sent a PM but don't know if you're checking another e-mail. I'm quite interested in your Cape Dory and will be East 1st week in July. Do I talk to you about the boat or is it broker listed at Parkers?

Classifieds at Good Old Boat

Post by tradewinds780 »

Barbara,

I'm sorry to hear of your loss and quite frankly it struck a little close to home as I am over 65 and getting my CD 27 ready to go cruising.

The price seems like a good deal and I was tempted myself as I still have to buy a dodger and Cape Horn for my boat but I just can't invest in another boat now without knowing I could sell mine first.

It looks as though another CD28 just sold.

I think A good place to advertise your boat might be: Good Old Boat magazine.

They have classified ads, a good following and are aiming at boats like yours.

You should check with the broker, see where he is advertising and see how much he would want if you find the buyer by advertising yourself.

I came across your post about the Cape Horn. Your last post, on that topic, back in May of '09, promised a report about it after you came back from a weeks sail.

Were you happy with the installation of the Cape Horn?

cape horn

Post by BarbofCapeCod »

Bill was very happy with the Cape Horn. Unfortunately, we didn't have the week's sail, we cut it short because of bad weather and were going to take a week in July, but...

We sailed from Chatham to Nantucket the time last June on one tack, with the Cape Horn doing most of the sailnig. Bill liked to fiddle with things, so he kept adjusting it. I, however, could sail for an hour or longer without touching it, as long as the winds held. We had trouble figuring out when to change from the light to the heavy wind vane, but I'm sure we would have gotten better at it.

Well, the boat sounded so good I bought it myself.

Now if anybody is looking for a winter getaway, I will be selling a CD 27 in ST. Pete, FL.

Does anybody know of a really good surveyor in the Boston, Cape Cod area? Please PM me.
