I just removed the toerail from my '71 Typhoon, which needs to be replaced. What's the best solvent to use to remove the old sealant, which is the original black compound. It's 30 years old and hard as a rock; I tried a scraper but it was pathetic. There must be something that will soften it up without hurting the gelcoat? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: How to remove old toerail sealant?
You are stuck with scraping it off. Anything that would eat the compound will also eat the gelcoat. You may find that a heat gun will soften it enough to scrape off with a sharp chisel of scraper. good luck.Ben wrote: I just removed the toerail from my '71 Typhoon, which needs to be replaced.
