Morey's Red Grease?

Post by marilou »

Anyone know the NAPA parts number? If they still sell it? Or who does? Local store does not find it. Thanks.

Try some of your local gas stations/garages. What you're looking for is:

Morey's Oil Super Red Premium Multi-Purpose EP Grease

The Lucas stuff should be fine, side by side I can't tell the
difference. Pennzoil 707L is also very similar. I have used all
3 for seacocks and I can't say any one is better than the other.

Personally I think they are great for seacocks but maybe a bit
heavy for winches. Winch grease is usually a lighter grease,
not nearly so sticky. I'm still on my first jar of Lewmar grease,
when I need more I may look for something more commercial and
less expensive.

A little smear of red grease on your emergency tiller access plate
and fuel filler cap each spring is a good thing also.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was driving down the road and saw a NAPA store and could not resist going in and trying to buy a cartridge of the Morey's grease that was discussed so much a few months back. They had one tube left, and I BOUGHT IT!
Here's all the pertinent NAPA info you will ever need to get any NAPA store to order this stuff for you.
Line code = "NCB"
Part # = "3209"
That will get you a 14 oz. cartridge of Morey's Super Red Premium Water Proof Mutli purpose E.P. Grease. Mine is sitting here on my desk.
Hope this helps some of you next season when it is time to service the seacocks.

If you don't have one, you need the owners manual for your boat. We have it online, right here. Scroll to the top of this page and click on the CDSOA or "Where to Look" icon. Then use the menu on the left side of the page and follow this path:

Where to Look -> Groups & Publications -> Online Manuals & Brochures -> CD Owners Manuals

Once you get there, select the manual for your boat. There are two that include the CD27. I recommend the 1981 version -- only because it's easier to read. In the 1981 manual, go to section 3.19 (page 29). It provides a description of the seacocks and how to maintain them -- including greasing them. And on page 68 there's a drawing showing a seacock and all of it's parts in an exploded view.

Hope this helps,
Cathy

Lubing Seacocks

Post by Shipscarver »

I misinterpreted comments on the Board and thought some form of periodic lube between pull-outs was needed. However, it seems if a seacock becomes stiff, or unmovable, that condition can not be resolved until the next pull-out. And, since here in Florida where Yards object to DIY boaters we only pull every 2-3 years for a bottom job, that's an expensive problem.
