We will either picnic in a small park across the street from Dodson Boatyard, or make reservations at a local restaurant. Contact Event Organizer Sally Perreten to let her know which you prefer (by registering online), and the majority will rule. We can either meet for drinks in the little park, or a couple of boats can raft-up and play host. Let’s make it 5 PM for drinks/snacks and think about eating at 6:30 PM. CLICK HERE for additional information.

Please register by July 20th!

Stonington Float-In

Post by Dixon Hemphill »

I envy you sailors who rendevous in Stonington Harbor in July. Take it from someone who was brought up in that area --- it's a great place to meet. As a youth I used to sail my $75.00 Cape Cod Knockabout in those waters back in the late 30's and early 40's. As a sideline, while a student at Stonington High School, I used to swim in the harbor and once placed second in a long-distance swim race across the harbor.

If you're there on a Sunday and want to eat out, consider Skipper's Dock located a half mile south of Dodson's on Water Street. The food is good and while dining you can listen to Charlie Holland's jazz band playing the good old songs. At Stonington H.S I formed a four man band in which Charlie was the piano player and there you'll find him some 68 years later still playing!
Within the the unlocked homes of the Swedish villages on the shores of the Baltic around the rocks sings the sea.

Don't keep Sally waiting.....

Register now while you're thinking about it.

Get an early start and Stonington, on Fishers Island Sound, is only a daysail away from Newport to the east, Clinton to the west, and Shelter Island to the south. It's a nice harbor and a great opportunity to meet up with fellow Cape Dorians (CDSOA members and non-members alike).

Please register by July 20th.

Stonington float in

Post by Sally Perreten »

We're closing in on the date - seems July is here! If you think you have registered, and you have not had an email from me, please register again or give me a phone call at 860-388-1170. And if you are coming from afar and need to use my car that afternoon for groceries, or whatever, let me know.

Showers and laundry at Dodson's, where you can also find the best of repairs and the best of people. Walk the main drag, Water Street. It's lovely.

We're about to try a shortcut into Napatree in our TY. If we don't run aground we'll post the coordinates of the starting point and tell you how. Don't try this with a deeper draught, of course. And if you have better wisdom, please share.

Hi Sally, the problem with cutting across the bay at Napatree is the sands are always moving, the route might be ok this week and not the next. I've sea Kayaked through there and sailed my Oday Daysailer many times and there are some really shallow areas. If you are going to try definitely do it at high tide!

cut to Napatree

Post by Sally Perreten »

Thank you for the heads, Mark. For those who want to try:

We succeeded today, though we can't imagine how you would tack in/out in a east/west wind. We found 5 red ball private (amateur) channel markers. If you start 1/2 way between the green bell and the western end of the outer breakwater at 41° 18' 86" and 071° 54' 48" and aim for 41° 18' 84" and 071° 53' 25" you will find the first marker. You will then be able to see the second. Usually boats are coming and going, which shows you the way. We were rail down going in and out so we didn't draw much, which was a comfort.

We would surely like to know about tacking in this "channel" ...how much room there is....incase we ever have to do it.

Sally, I squeaked through there in my CD-30 (4' 2") a few years back. We were anchored inside of Napatree for a couple of days and had talked to quite a few boaters with local knowledge. What sold me on trying it that year was the guy with over four foot of draft and some very expensive props as his first point of contact.

We did it on a very high but still rising tide on a bright sunny day. My son drove while I stood up as high as I could directing him to the center of the deepest channel. It is not a route for the faint of heart and might not be good every year or even an entire season.

I was puckered up the whole time but it was kind of fun and it is sand. Might be a good way to clean the barnacles off the bottom of the keel if you did it on a regular basis, Steve.

Steve, you are, indeed, a brave man. We never dared try it when we had our CD27, though we watched people doing it. We were too faint of heart, and did the long way around always.

There is a fine line between brave and foolish. Since we made it without a bump, we were brave. If we had gotten stuck, we would have been very foolish, Steve.

We tend to run aground, or at least drag ourselves over it, IN the channel at low tide with Realization's 5'3" draft. Of course with a rising tide the channel's not a problem. We would NEVER cut across Little Narragansett Bay and I advise others not to as well.

Don't forget! Register for this event by July 20th! It's free, easy and online.

draught

Post by Sally Perreten »

Ah yes...3' is, like, 10' less than 5'. It's one thing to try it in a Ty just before high tide, well heeled over....and another thing entirely in anything that draws more than we do. What was that about fools rushing in where angels fear to tread?

Have you been to Stonington?

Post by Sally Perreten »

Of course you are joining us for the Float In! Is it your first time visiting Stonington? If you are looking for Dodson Boatyard it is all the way up at the north end on the east side, past the fishing wharfs. The dinghy dock is on the north side of the yard.

When you are directed to your mooring, the A row is the west side of the harbor, and the alphabet goes up as you get close to the yard docks. 'H' is the row nearest the docks. The moorings have pickup whips.

If you don't yet have a mooring reservation, better hurry. (860) 535-1507.

The anchorage area is on the west side of the harbor and is obvious by the lack of moorings. It's rather opposite the town beach and before you get to the fishing wharfs. Look for green can "7".
