1982 Cape Dory 28' Sloop "Sojourner" SOLD!!
1982, Cape Dory 28' Sloop, hull #330, $18,500.
After 2 years of "should we or shouldn't we" we have decided we should. Sojourner is for sale.
We have continued working on her right up until this past week, installing new curtains and port screens from John Danicic. She is immaculate inside and out, operating like a dream, and ready to sail you through the summer. And there's still plenty of summer left.
A survey from 2008 (before we had completed our renovations) listed the fair market value at $28,000. Located in Essex, MD.
I have a site that has lots of photos and complete information at http://www.oldragbaggers.com

Not our cradle
No, the storage cradle belongs to Maryland Marina, where we usually haul out for the winter.

question
On your vessel I've noticed that the hatch over the main salon seems to be a fixed hatch, is this correct or is it an opening hatch like so many 28's Ive seen. If it is fixed, can it be made to be an opening hatch without too much trouble? Thanks.

Fixed hatch
The hatch is fixed. The raised base has the same dimensions as the forward opening hatch. The opening would have to be enlarged to match that of the forward hatch if you were to install a matching opening hatch.

question
was that original? I have never seen that kind of fixed hatch before on a 28' Just didn't know whether that was factory or there used to be a hatch there, and either you, or someone else before you, took it out. Just curious

Answer
It is original as far as we know. There is nothing there that would indicate to me that there has ever been anything there except what is there now.
I have read posts before from other members who have installed an opening hatch midships themselves, so I had always assumed that when I have seen them they were added later by the owners and were not original equipment, but I could be mistaken.
If you do a search I am sure you will find threads that deal with this subject. I thought I had seen one somewhere by Cathy Monaghan???

Re: Answer
Speaking strictly about the CD28, the factory standard was one opening hatch forward and a fixed Lexan cover over the saloon. When buying new there was an option to add an opening hatch over the saloon, either the 19 x 19 to match the forward, or a smaller size corresponding to the opening under the Lexan. One could choose the orientation of the opening also. Hope this helps.oldragbaggers wrote: ... I had always assumed that ... they were added later ... and were not original equipment ...

Thanks Armond.
Can always count on the members here to know the answer. I was quite certain it was original.

Installing an opening hatch
If anyone knows, what would be involved in adding a forward opening hatch in place of the Lexan cover Given the 28 years since mfg., is the Lexan cover in the salon a standard size for a hatch made today or would the opening have to be reduced in size or perhaps enlarged to accommodate a hatchkerrydeare wrote:Speaking strictly about the CD28, the factory standard was one opening hatch forward and a fixed Lexan cover over the saloon. I am thinking of warmer climates where one would want as much ventilation as possible in the main salon area.
Thanks.
