Companionway boards

Post by mjohn »

Just recently launched our new (1979) TY - Pardessus - and noticed that other TYs have three companionway boards vs. the two on ours. Is this something that changed with older/newer boats or did the former owner simply add replacements?

Thanks

Drop Boards

All of the older Tys that I know of have three companionway drop boards.

BTW:
Usually the bottom board, (veneered plywood) starts to rot or separate first.

No need to make three new boards. Cut the middle board to the same dimensions as the bottom board.

Toss the old bottom board. Let the old middle board become the new bottom board. Cut the top board down to become the new middle board.

Now you only have to make a new top board.

Thanks for the quick response John.

Actually, the two boards we have are individually larger than each of the three boards we've observed elsewhere. The two boards completely fill the companionway and there is no need for a third. I was just wondering if this is original to the boat.

In a word, I would say no.

Sounds like too much work. Why wouldn't you just make a new bottom board instead of having to modify the middle and top boards and make a new top board?

Bob,

Yup, that'll work. Can't think of any reason why it wouldn't.

drop boards

Here is a link to the drop boards my boat partner made for our typhoon. Three smaller boards are easier to stow below than 2 larger boards. The louvers are a nice detail and add lots of ventilation.
