Cleaning/polishing hatch plexiglass

With all the talk about toothpaste I was wondering whether it would work on the plexiglass in the hatches. I have original Bowmar hatches and the plexiglass is very weathered. Actually, BonAmi would be better since I'd need so much toothpaste for the hatches I couldn't brush for a year. Does anyone have any ideas?

There is a multi-part plastic cleaning/polishing system called "Maguires". It does not take out heavy scratches, but does a beautiful job of getting rid of the gray haze. In a very short time (less than two boat-minutes) I had converted the finish on my hatches from barely translucent to clear enough to be able to see the windex at the top of the mast. If you wish continue to be able to see through them you need to do it several times a year. I am certain that there are other similar plastic polishes.

I can back up Matt's post. I use Meguiar's Mirror Glaze cleaner (#17 I think) and polish (#10) on the dodger windows and on the Bomar hatches on our CD32. It does a nice job on both.

Any fine grit rubbing compound will work fine. It's best done with a buffing machine, but can be done by hand. If you use a machine, keep it moving, so you don't overheat a spot. Finish up with a coat of wax and it will look like new!

auto parts stores (NAPA) should have it for you. they have about a 25 step product process for car finishes. these are part of that.

I've used Meguiar's mirror glaze and polish for years on plexiglas framed artwork. Very good product. The best bet for suppliers, I have found, is plastic and plexiglas suppliers. A side note DON'T use Windex on plexiglas- the ammonia in the Windex will cause the plexiglas to cloud up. regards, Bill/CD25/"Sadie"

Does anyone know anything about replacing the original hatch, or is that a no-no? I don't want to destroy the original idea, but it seems that a replacement hatch with better hardward would be the answer. The Lewmar hatches look good, but pricey.
