Question about Outhaul Casting/Boom for Typhoon

Post by Tom Barringer »

The end of my boom and outhaul casting has been obliterated/shredded apparently from storm damage when "Maggie" broke her mooring in under the watch of previous owners. I spoke to Rig-Rite/Spartan Spars and ordered a new outhaul casting with no problem. My question, however, is the end of the boom has two carriage bolts across its beam at about the point where the outhaul casting's leading edge would be inside the boom once inserted. Rig-Rite says they don't know what they are. I suspect they are a repair to hold the failed outhaul casting in place. DOes anyone else have these two bolts, one on each side on the lower edge of the boom, across its beam? If so what are they for?

i have 1984 typhoon. end of boom has a single cleat for outhaul with two thru boom screws. there is also a black plastic fitting at the end of the boom that is held on by several thru boom bolts. several attachments can be made from this for a topping lift and attaching the main sheet block assembly.
