Upholstery Advice Wanted

Post by Scott Ritchey »

I plan to recover the cabin cushions in my CD27 in the very near future. I'm looking for advice on the best type of fabric to use (or not use). Any insight will be appreciated.

On my previous boat (C22) I used Terrycloth slipcovers. They were made out of beachtowels with velcro closures and were easily removable and washable. They are much more comfortable than the course material usually used and I think a solid blue to match the Sunbrella looks better. When I do my CD27, I will do the same again.

Hi Scott,

We covered our cushions with a Sunbrella fabric. They have something called 'Tweed'?, a dark blue color that looks very nice with our wood/teak interior. The wet bathing suits, rain, spills, etc are no problem for the Sunbrella (same material as a mainsail cover). It has been on our boat (CD28) for about 5 years, and stll doing well.

I just replaced the cushions in my CD25D. The original tweed was somewhat dark, so I replaced it with Sunbrella "Wheat Linen".which brightens up the interior a bit. While it will show dirt more, it will also be washable, and it should last a good long time.

I suggest you make a few visits to upholsterers just to get an idea of your options, and then prepare a brief written spec that can be attached to your order. or transcribed to the order form. Anything not writtten down will be forgotten!

Resist the temptation to choose a fabric as quickly as possible i.e. in 30 seconds. The sample books represent the manufacturers' universes of fabrics, only a few of which you will find suitable. Invest your time to find a few choices, and then pick the one that's right for you.
