Do all CD's List to Port?

Post by Richard Feffer »

My CD30MKII has a noticable list to port while resting quietly in her birth. The batteries, fuel tank, water heater, and lazarette with spare anchor line and chain, etc. are all on the port side. Understandably that will contribute to the list. On the starboard side is a water tank. I thought filling the tank would nearly compensate for the out of balance. It did help, but only a little. There is still a noticeable list to that side. Question is: Is this a design problem in this model? With the aft quarter birth, there is no lazarette on that side in which to store some heavy items to balance the weight. Any other MKII owners have the same condition?
Thanks,
Richard

Alas, I must inform you that my CD28 also listed to port at one time. However, an oldtimer sold me the secret one day at McCarthy's Bar along the waterfront at Annapolis, MD. It cost me two beers and a dance but her advice worked. Place three cases of three kinds of beer in the ice box and fill with ice. Guaranteed, your list will be corrected.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. After 3 full days of spring tuning and maintenance, Jasmine finally is in her berth after a nice sail along the St. Lawrence. Good luck with your list.

Ed,
Thanks for the advice. I'm not fond of beer. Would three cases of Malibu Rum have the same results?

Does the "list to port" seem to clear up before or after drinking the 3 cases of beer?

When you get tired of worrying about the list, lie down in the quarter berth and take a nap. The boat will float on her lines. (Maybe she was designed that way! <g>)

Boat continues to list. Once I begin to list to the other side, it's not so noticable!

Neil,
I tried that. I woke up in the sump under the engine!

Would think you would should list to port, then the boat would look straight up and the world would have a list to starboard, a definite improvement on things.

Tern lists to port also. Beats me why? Does it matter? I dont know.

Richard,

Our CD32 also lists slightly to port. Two batteries, the water heater, the ice box (when full), galley pots, pans and supplies and the port water tank added together outweigh her starboard side full fuel and water tanks.

We've added an additional battery (not to correct the list) on the starboard side and store all heavy items such as tools, bottled water and beverages and canned goods on the starboard side as well. Also, we keep the port water tank empty unless we're cruising. This seems to help. Also, if we have our inflatable dinghy with us, we store it down below up against the starboard setee (there's room in the 32).

I don't think that she'd list so much if the batteries were located lower in the port lazerette, but if they were there wouldn't be much room in there for storage. It's one of those compromises.

Richard,

I believe it's a political statement.

No, no, it's not a political statement, as Ron Flannery maintains. It's a matter of dressage, as my tailor used to say. Some dress to starboard, some to port, depending on the size and shape of their equipment. You shouldn't fret about it. It's perfectly normal. You'll be just fine.

Listing...!!! This is proof that all CD sailors ARE crazy! My CD 33 floats beautifully on her lines, even when I don't!
