Calling all Tyhoon Open Cockpit Owners

Post by mike ritenour »

I'd like to rally all open cockpit owners so that we can exchange data and get a count of how many boats are still out there.

Please respond only if your an actual owner of the 19' Typhoon Open Cockpit (no cuddy cabin at all) or know of the whereabouts of one.

Thanks in advance,

Rit

1976 open Ty Daysailer

Post by Jim Buck »

Mike,

Please count me in as a new owner of an open Ty (no cuddy). Hull #49 will be plying the waters of Western Lake Erie beginning in early May. She's very original and has been used very little, although she does need to have a good deck scrubbing. I understand and respect some believe winches are not necessary on a boat this size, but I would like to add them for handling a genny. Can anyone tell me please what brand and size winches came on Ty's in this period?

Jim

correction + question

My bad, the hull number confirms its a '76. Now, about period winches...?

CD Typhoon "G" open cockpit

Post by OveRCs »

Hi Mike,

I actually haven't laid eyes on her yet (except in photos), but I am the new owner of a 1975 G model hull #24 "Faith" out of Toms River NJ. She is currently being upgraded and prepared for shipment to her new moorings in Mangrove Bay, Somerset, Bermuda. Hope to have her landed in Bermuda before hurricane season starts.

New tanbark sails provided by Gerry at Sailcare -- I asked him to keep my original sails as a pattern in case any of you clubfooted jibbers wanted him to make a replacement set.

Also switching to slab reefing with a reefing kit from Sailrite, "sail cradle" (lazy jack system) from Sailcare, boom vang, and model 400 boomkicker from Maui Pro Sailing.

Gordon Nelson at Nelson Marine Basin is doing all the repair/install work and is adding a bilge pump w/ thru hull amidships, deep cycle battery in the forward locker, and a flexible solar recharge unit that I can lash to the foredeck.

Gordon is helping me keep to budget for this project as I will have a hefty shipping bill and import duty by the time she arrives.

I will update you folks as thing progress.

What makes it a "G" model?

Post by Bob Ohler »

Ron, I'll bite. What makes your Typhoon a G model?

Thanks,

Typhoon Models

Post by Oswego John »

Hi Bob,

There are three basic models of the Typhoon. The Weekender with the cuddy cabin with bunks. The open Daysailer and the Daysailer with an open cuddy.

The HIN on the transom's identification states CPD plus a suffix letter.

The suffix for the Weekender is CPD"D"

The open Daysailer without cuddy is CPD"G"

The Daysailer with the small open cuddy is CPD"K".

Apologies Mike

Post by Jim Buck »

Sorry Mike. I wasn't trying to be impatient as I was actually hoping other members with '76 Ty's would weigh in on size and brand of winches. My CPDG'er has none but one might assume that CD also used the same brand and size for the 1976 model year for the "D" and "K" models. My long ago 74 "D" model had Barlow 15's I believe. Not sure if when they changed winch brands but I know of a '79 that didn't have Barlow's. Again sorry if I sounded impatient. Jim

Better to give credit to Jim Davis and Cathy for pointing this info out a while back.

At this point

I'd better chime in. My wife still has hers, hull number 11. Note this is the green one in the section about the TyDS in the description of the boats.

Also March/April 2006 Good Old Boat.

Winches for a boat this size are as you have noted, not really necessary. My guess if Cape Dory fitted any they would have been Tufnol Snubbing winches ( http://www.norfolkmarine.co.uk/shop-onl ... -2029.html ). At the time these boats were made Cape Dory was fitting Tufnol on the smaller boats. For Sandy's boat I found a pair of small bronze ones at a second hand shop that fit the small round spaces on the cockpit coaming. They look good but are seldom used.

Who says all CDs are white?

Beautiful boat. Complete with original CD outboard motor bracket. What a sweetheart.
