Has anyone replaced the bow sprint backing plate? The one on my CD 30 ketch is shot. What's involved in grinding it out of the fiberglass?

Bow sprint backing plate replacment

Re: Bow sprint backing plate replacment
Yes I replaced the one on my CD28 last year. Basically the plate is tabbed in with fiberglass. You just grind away the tabs. When I asked that question a year ago I was told that the hardest part is getting the plate out. Not only do you have to grind off the tabs holding the plate but also the tabs holding the perpendicular part. It it also glued to the deck with sealant compound. The folks next door to me struggled to get theirs out. Mine on the other hand fell out with just a tug, right on top of my head. If you want further info on what to expect just write me. I also have pictures of some different steps in the process. Good Luck

Re: Bow sprint backing plate replacment
Hi,
Although we sail fresh water and the boat has only seen fresh water, the backing plate on our Cd30 (1983)has lost all of it's paint in large curley cues, and appears to be a slab of steel. Is this correct?? They actually stuck a chunk of steel up there? And when you took it out, it hit you in the head too?? I bet you will rememeber that locker with a depth of fondness few of us will understand!
...So what is everyone replacing this backing plate with? I suspect that rust has started to eat mine up if it is indeed steel..jeesh not even a hunk of cast iron..but steel. They had to know it would disappear in time..sorta like an aspirin.
Well, looks like another project for the summer!
Cheers~!

Re: Bow sprint backing plate replacment
Larry, Yep they put a big hunk of steel up there with rebars welded on. The thing did knock a little sense into me and I had a whole new plate made out of stainless steel as didn't want to have to climb around in there ever again. I have pictures I can send if you want to see what you are up against.

Re: Bow sprint backing plate replacment
Take a look at your brace for the edson gear and the chain plates for the main. I believe you will be unpleasantly surprised. I rebuilt the brace using solid bar stock to replace the pieces that rest on the hull. And am going to replace the stem piece with a ss fabrication. The chainplates were removed and replaced with 3 layers of unidirectional fibreglass with new alumin. backing plates. This job sucked and was very dusty and confined. To do it I cut back a piece of the liner in the head and hanging locker for better access. Good Luck!!Les wrote: Has anyone replaced the bow sprint backing plate? The one on my CD 30 ketch is shot.
