We just purchased a CD30 and the owner is moving up and would like to keep the boat's name, fine with us, but now we have to remove it. It is painted on. The broker suggested oven cleaner, seems a bit harsh, any suggestions? Thanks

Removing Name?

Re: Removing Name?
Jim, I recently edited a book in which the author, a retired chemical engineer, recommended using oven cleaner to remove paint from fiberglass.
I was appalled, considering the warnings on cans of oven cleaner not to let the stuff touch aluminum and chrome, and queried his advice.
But in the end it appeared his advice is sound--and very effective. Simply spray a little oven cleaner on a clean rag and smear it thinly over the paint, taking care not to touch any metal, plastic or varnish. The paint should bubble fairly quickly, and when it does, you can wipe it off with another clean rag. Remove all traces of oven cleaner as soon as you can, and wash the area well with fresh water. You'll want to wear rubber gloves and eye protection, of course, because it will burn your skin if it makes contact.

Re: Removing Name?
Hi Jim,
I just removed the name from my new CD 30 the other day. The yard gave me something called Interstrip 299E made by Interlux. It worked great, and it will not harm the fiberglass. When I was done they told me to lightly Wet Sand the area with 800 grit paper then compound. It didn't take long to do, and The transom almost looks new.
Good luck,
Jerry

Re: Removing Name?
Hi,
A few weeks ago I did the same thing on Allia. I used oven cleaner and it worked like a charm. Not a trace left. Stick to a small area at a time. I tried to wipe the whole name off in one swipe and I had a mess for awhile.
you can see photos of the before and after here: http://dobravoda.tripod.com/Allia_CD25/index.html

I use easy off, it works well. Don't let it drip on the boottop, etc.Jim Newton wrote: We just purchased a CD30 and the owner is moving up and would like to keep the boat's name, fine with us, but now we have to remove it. It is made from lye, a strong base, and it may yellow the gelcoat. If this happpens you can remove the yellowing with oxalic acid. I use a product called y-10 stain remover. It is jelled oxalic acid.
If the name has been on for a while, you may have to wet sand and compound to get the "shadow" off.
good luck
