I really need to spring for new cushions for Sine Qua Non but this year just isn't gonna be the year for that. My cushions are hard to sleep on and because of it my wife and I often decide not to sleep aboard but instead go home. Its not something we really want to do.

I know I can do all kinds of things with getting my own foam and doing something myself, and that's definitely a possibility. But I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with a tuffed topper. Its about 2" thick and I'm wondering if those who have use one have found that it made a big difference in sleeping comfort.

As a cheaper interim solution, suggest you check out self-inflating air mattresses at a good camping store. They come in a variety of sizes and thicknesses, are easy to put out at bed time, and roll up easily if you want to put them away during the day. I use one on Sea Owl when I want to nap/sleep over.

Don't need a pump to inflate, and very comfy....

Hi Warren,

We've never used a Tufted Topper but a few years ago I purchased a 2" thick king size slab of high density memory foam. I cut and shaped it to fit the v-berth (3 pieces - sides and filler), since that's where we sleep. The bottom edge follows the contour of the top of the v-berth cushions. And its flaired so the top edge follows the contour of the hull. I made new covers and covered the entire thing, old cushions (still in their old covers), new foam and all. So our hard as rock 4" cushions are now much more comfortable 6" cushions. Here's what they look like:

And yes, they really are more comfortable.

You can purchase a foam mattress pad from Wal-Mart or Target. They have them in 1 /12, 2 and 3" thicknesses but it isn't the best foam -- only 2 or 3 lbs.

If you go this route, I recommend getting a better quality foam. The better the quality, the more dense it will be. The density is measured in pounds. So you'll be more comfortable, and pay alot more, with 5 or 6-lb memory foam than you will with 3-lb memory foam. Keep in mind that it is VERY heavy, so you probably don't want more than a 2" thick piece of 5-lb foam on top of your old cushions. It's also very expensive. I remember when you did that and memory foam is certainly great. I have it on my bed at home. Its the weight that bothers me. I was considering something "portable"....that could be rolled up and stored or taken off the boat when not needed.

Certainly your way is the best way to go if I want to do something on a more permanent level.
