From the photograph, it appears that the crank is designed to turn the 1GM engine counterclockwise!

Is that true, or is the photo somehow giving a mirror image??

Anyone with a 1GM engine care to comment?

Dick,

My service manual says "when turning by hand, rotate to the left, counterclockwise". (And that's how I've always turned mine.) Hope this helps.
