Bottom Paint (Again)

Post by John Dupras »

OK - I know that htis is probably common knowledge, but I'm a rookie when it comes to this. This will be the first time we haul Mariah for bottom painting. She has been caoted with Petit Trinidad in the past and I have been reading about the Micron CSC on the board a lot. Are the two compatible? Can I sand and paint over the Petit with the Micron? Would I be better off to kep with the Petit? Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

www.interlux.com. You'll find their complete guide to bottom prep... what needs light sanding, what heavy, what removal, etc.

First, Trinidad is an excellent paint. But those I know have used it over the last few years state that the paint buildup finally gets to them. These days paint chips and its associated ground contamination protection makes sanding and chipping much more difficult. Here on the Cheaspeake, we are responsible to collect all sanding and chips during the operation. Big fines....

CSC and CSC Extra will go over nicely over paint in good condition, i.e. not flaking or peeling. I would recommend a roughing up of the Petit with a little sandpaper for any additional new paint. Then make sure that the surface is clean and sanding DUST FREE. CSC only requires about 16 hours of "curing" time before launch. To my knowledge is no rush after the 16 hour number to get it in the water as with other copper based paints....i.e. most standard paints have a min and max time window to get the boat in after painting...copper oxidizes.....also, I have a feeling that Interlux will not continue to manufacture just CSC in the future...I bet that it will be replaced by the CSC Extra.......Extra has about 20% more slime protection....

It can stay out of the water indefinitely... that's what makes it a multi-season paint. As long as the paint lasts, there's protection.
