Robert,

I truly feel your pain. :D

BTW: Today was another clear, crisp autumn day with low humidity.

It looks like we'll have to fire up the wood stove again tonight. They predict it'll be in the 20s tonight in the Adirondacks. It shouldn't go much lower than the mid 30s near the lake.

It's almost time to get my long handled woolies out of mothballs.

For sure, I'll be thinking of you and your torment next February when I'm up to my elbow in the white stuff.

Be strong, my friend. This, too, will pass.

O J :D

I for one really appreciate you taking the time to post your photos. Living in the monotonous heat and humidity and "flatness" of South Florida, it is great to be able to look at photos of New England and east coast sailing and dream about the beautiful waters, rocky and mountainous shore lines, cool temps, low humidity, chilly nights.

Your photos are terrific and take me to places I will probably never visit but are places I think about often.

Thank you all :!:
We had a frost advisory last night, so Fall is definitely upon us.

You're right about everything except the humidity. Summer in the northeast is just as humid as in Florida. Fighting the mold and mildew it causes is a never ending battle, especially in areas prone to fog (that would be the entire northeast). This summer the weather was pretty awful, LOTS of rain (make that thunderstorms), fog, humidity, and for some weird reason, it was exceptionally cool. Anyway, that didn't stop us from enjoying our cruise but it did tend to keep us in port longer than we normally would stick around in any one place. Anyway, here are some more photos.

Gorgeous!

Hi Tom & Jean,

Now those are gorgeous sailing grounds! Now all you have to do is get Rover's name and hailing port on the transom.

It's amazing how that piling in the photo in your previous posting completely blocked all of that.

Those are fantastic wildlife photos by the way. We never seem to be able to retrieve the camera fast enough to get shots like those.

Who Won?

Post by Tom Keevil »

Bill, it was not a fair contest. The eagle is attacking our anchor buoy, a female bufflehead decoy. That also helped on timing the shot, since I knew the eagle's plan and its target. As for the winner, it's hard to say. The eagle didn't get a dinner, but when the buoy began to sink, we had to repair the talon holes.

Photos - Sakonnet River

Post by Cathy Monaghan »

July 29th was a very stressful day. We left Quissett in the morning with visibility in the 1-3 nm range. In about an hour it was reduced to a boatlength or two. So we spent the next 9 hours in thick fog as we headed out of Buzzards Bay for Narragansett Bay. We were originally headed for Newport but Bruce didn't like the idea of heading up East Passage in thick fog with the possibility of having to deal with a ship or two, or the normal busy pleasure boat traffic (not that they'd be out in the fog). So we decided to go up the Sakonnet instead. So the radar and GPS were running all day. We started out hand-steering, but that didn't last long. "Squeaky" ran all day too. We did have a couple close encounters during the trip, but only one was really scary, the others we could see on radar.

<a href="http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c349/ ... G_1164.jpg" target="_blank"><img width="600" src="http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c349/ ... 4.jpg"></a>
July 29th - The anchorage north of Fogland Point on the Sakonnet River, RI. The fog had lifted just enough to see a couple hundred feet so Bruce snapped this pic.

More photos - Narragansett Bay

Post by Cathy Monaghan »

This photo was snapped on July 31st as we sailed past Warwick Point lighthouse. Even though it was rainy, it was one of the best sailing days of our trip with a nice stiff, steady breeze. When this photo was taken, we were on our way from Potter's Cove on Prudence Island to East Greenwich, CT. When we got to East Greenwich, it started to pour as I was on deck taking the reefed main down.

The following photo was snapped on August 2nd. You're looking out over Dutch Harbor on the west side of Conanicut Island. It was another rainy, foggy day.

More of Vancouver Island

Post by Tom Keevil »

Just to assure you that fog is not an exclusively east coast phenomenon, here is a photo that represents two full days of scenery in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Of course we were accompanied by all of the shipping heading into and out of Seattle, Tacoma and Vancouver. Thank goodness for radar.
