Slow load

Post by Don S. »

Anybody else having a problem with slow downloads of posts? I'm waiting 30-60 seconds and more for every post I click on. But I'm running a 400 mHz machine on a T1. The problem started around 2 weeks ago

I'm connected via a nailed up MCI T1 and I get through very quickly. You might try purging out your cache/temporary internet files and/or trying an alternate browser (IE if you're using Netscape or Netscape if you're using IE).

No problems here using Time Warner RoadRunner at about 1.4 Mbps. Must be as is suggested above, your machine is loaded with junk. Clean out those temp folders, your deleted items folders, Word, and then reboot and try it again.

Don,

You're not crazy. I've been having the same problem on the T-1 at school (where I teach networking!) Thought it was particular to our network. Glad to see your post.

I tried the suggested "clean out" to no avail. Don't see the problem with my modem connection at home, so have to suspect something related to our nice fast networks.

Anyone else have hints?

How about trying a "ping" of the site when you are having trouble? At the moment I am getting responses in less than 200 msec on the East Coast. At your MS/DOS prompt type: ping toolworks.com and follow it with a RETURN. At the next prompt, you can simply let the right arrow key repeat to enter the same command again. A detailed trace would be nice. Anyone know the DOS Command for that?

Maybe you are using the same slow overloaded ISP?

Good luck,

The ping reply was intantaneous. My cache and .tmp are clean as a whistle (as always) but "waiting for a reply" is still taking 30-60 secs+ on toolworks.com. Other sites are fine.

Boy, am I glad I thought I was so smart! Now I am having the problem and my pings aren't going so well. Maybe the web is in meltdown?

At the moment the pings are good and the response is good, but a while back I was losing packets fairly often and the response on this site and some others was so bad I would get up from the computer and move books around.

Maybe the web master has a clue?
