WTB Cape Dory 36

We are searching for a CD36 (ideally on the East or Gulf coast). We are familiar with all the boats listed on the major boat sales websites, but if anyone knows of others out there we'd be interested in hearing about them. We are pretty much limiting our search to 1983 and newer because of what we have read about corrosion on the earlier boats (due to steel backing plates at the chain plates). As a side note, if you Cape Dory pros out there think that's an unnecessary limitation, we'd be interested to hear your thoughts on why.
We love the Cape Dory design and every time we try to convince ourselves to consider other options, we come back to the Cape Dory. Any help in our hunt will be greatly appreciated!

Our CD30k is a 1979 and the steel chain plates look like new. If you find a boat that did not have leaks at the chain plates you should have no trouble with them and you may be able to find a great deal on an older boat. You will find that most CD owners take very good care of their boats.

Thanks for your response. I corresponded with David Perry of Robinhood and he also ensured me that there was no reason to limit my search to the later models. I'm overly cautious of corrosion because of my line of work, but it sounds like this is something easy enough to keep tabs on throughout the buying and ownership process. So, let me revise my query- Anybody know of a good CD36 (of any year) available?

Chase,
I'm a Coast Guard pilot. Every time we hover over the water we are essentially coating the entire helicopter in salt water, so we spend a lot of time trying to find and prevent corrosion.

She is a beauty and is currently drydocked in city island, N.Y.
While I have not officially listed it for sale, you can be amongst the first to take a look. The price is 69,000

I have completely gutted my 1982 CD 36. The chain plates look fine. The backing plate for the head stay had a lot of rust. I took it out. Not for the faint hearted but doable. I don't think it would have failed though. Not a very well constructed component but it is one of only a few flaws in an other wise well built boat and I have now seen every part of the boat. Thanks John. I am actually a frequenter of your website- I admire your project quite a bit. After lots of reading and some correspondence with other CD owners and Robinhood Marine, I'm now pretty comfortable with the steel reinforcements and no longer am limiting my search to '83 and later. We're still looking for a CD- the search is long and a little stressful, but mostly fun!

Thanks for the kind words. We still have a long way to go. There seem to be a number of 36s on the market. I really don't think $10-$15K difference between a nice boat and a worn out boat is worth squabbling over given the enormous amount of money you will likely spend on the boat over the long haul. Having said that, since my plans included gutting from the start every dollar mattered. I wish you the best of luck in your search.
