powerboat shaft bearings

Post by Britt »

Dear Powerboaters
On the stern tube of my 28 Cape Dory cruiser, just forward of the propeller, I found two small openings "holes" about the size of a thin pencil that according to the owners manual are access holes to the set screws that secure the shaft bearing in place (pg 20 & 74). The manual says there are 4 set screws, perhaps 2 holes have been painted or caulked closed. My plan is to caulk these two holes closed as well. However, I fear these openings may serve to water lubricate the shaft bearing and therefore closing them would be a mistake.

Any thoughts appreciated, Britt

I am at the same place you are. I have at least 4 holes for the set screws and a couple more for ????. The holes are for the set screws that hold the bearing in the stern tube. Was your bearing lose, mine was and there was a set screw into the bronze of the bearing to keep it from turning in the stern tube. That doesn't work. I am in the process of doing something ????? to hold the bearing in the stern tube. I have hull #19 which has a bearing at the fwd end of the shaft also, under the shaft log. I don't know what holds it in. I am replacing both bearings and installing a PSS shaft seal.

I too am looking for advice, tips, lessons learned, HELP!
