What is the correct prop for CD27?

Post by Dwight »

I have a 12LH8 three blade, the engine smokes when pushed and the boat will not go over 4.5 kts. Thinking of going back to the two blade but do not know the correct prop Dia and pitch.
Any ideas for a bow roller on the 27?
thanks

Dwight:
As you probably know, there are several variables to take into consideration when choosing a prop and it can still often be a trial and error type thing. You don't say what engine you have, etc., but the prop I have on my 1981 CD-27 with a Yanmar YSM-8 is a Michigan Wheel model 12L09 for a 1' standard taper prop shaft. I believe their part number is 370053. This might be a good starting point, though I would give Michigan Wheel a call (616/452-6941). As for a bow roller idea, I'm sending you some digital pictures of one I've rigged up using an off-the-shelf Windline URM-4 Universal Bow Mount Roller (available from West Marine or Defender) and a few bits of stainless steel angle to handle my 22 lb. Delta plow. I can still use the anchor chocks on the bronze bow casting and no modification of it or the forestay was required as the rig is angled slightly to starboard. It's not as pretty as a teak bowsprit but its less maintenance and it works for me.

My CD27 with the Yanmar YSB 8 has a left hand 12x8 three-blade, and seems to work fine - I can get lots of smoke by overrevving the engine, but she'll run at better than five knots all day if you ask pretty and she knows you.
