Good price for an '82 CD25

Post by Mark Cook »

I'm looking at a 1982 Cape Dory 25 in great shape. It was $32,000 new and the guy is asking me to give him a fair offer. I don't know what a fair offer would be. Please help. Post here or e-mail to mcooker@earthlink.net Thanks.

Have it surveyed.

Original purchase price has little relation to current asking price on a boat of this vintage. As the topic says..have the boat surveyed if you are serious about it. Make sure you inform your surveyer that you are looking for hull value as well as the standard marine systems survey. Just my $.02.

Having just bought a CD28 last summer, here's what I'd do: Look the boat over carefully to get an idea of its general condition. If there are no major problems and you're still interested in buying the boat, find out it's BUC value (this is equivalent to "blue book" value for a used car). You can do this at www.bucvalu.com. Use this price range to negotiate an initial offer, but make sure you specify clearly, in writing if necessary, that this is offer is contingent on the results of a professional survey. If you can agree with the owner on an initial offer, then hire the best surveyor you can find---spend some time and effort to research this one. At the end of the survey, the surveyor will tell you what the boat needs to bring it up to speed, and estimate a fair market value for the boat. If this estimate is lower than your initial offer, renegotiate or back out of the deal. If it is the same or higher, sign the dotted line and you got yourself a great boat. Good luck.

I have an '84 25D and according to the title the Factory delivered price (in '84) is only around 25K (I dont have the title at home)! BTW, this is the same price that the state uses to determine current taxation on the boat. If that is indeed the case, then I would have a hard time believing that a '82 CD25 listed for 32K. Just MHO, but that sounds high to me based on the informtion on my title.

Mark, if you are looking for a good boat with good value, we have just posted a 1983 Cape Dory 27' for $24,000 (negotiable). She is well maintained with low engine hours and gentle use. It's in Maryland. Call if you're interested. We are in NJ at (732) 826-9033.

Here's another site to look up "blue book" prices.

I've seen a nice looking 1982 CD-25D on trailer for sale in Port Clinton, Ohio for $16,500 when I became iterested in a larger boat.

Can't say much about the general condition, except the exterior looked good. Guy got no offers, (I couldn't get it to Atlanta) so he kept it.

Have seen others in decent condition in the range of $18,000 to $22,000, vintage 1982-1984. Again, no idea of the real condition of motor of hull.

Is this a 25 or a 25D? It is rare for a 25 of any vintage to go for more than $10,000.

BOAT/US has a value service through their insurance department. It won't provide you much more than a ballpark, but it ought to make it clear that there is a significant difference between a 25 and a 25D. Check it out at:

Good luck in your search!

Price may be true based on what options he selected...electronics, etc. I priced one out in end of 84 at $37.5K.
This is no doubt a CD25D...take a look at the web page below for picture confirmation. Pricing I have seen have been between $18K to $22K) Priced to move quickly can, of course, lower.
