Universal engine question

Post by MFC »

Surveyed 330 with a Universal 5424 which ran well, no smoke, moved the boat at 5+ through the water, sounded okay. It ran rather cool though (155 at 2000rpm and 160 at 2600) and only would rev to 2600RPM. My untrained ear tells me that was more a product of throttle cable length or something of that sort -- rather than having "maxed out" the engine.

Any thoughts on this? What is the normal top RPM? Does low RPM signify anything in particular? What about the temps?

thx

Check the linkage first

MFC:
At first, I was thinking you were over propped, but that would probably create overheating. Since you are not over heating, but you have low rpms, this may indicate a throttle linkage problem. Can you advance the throttle down on the engine and "by pass" the throttle cable? This would indicate a throttle cable or cable attachment problem.

Let us know what you discover.

CD330/Universal 5424 question

Post by Ralph H »

My CD330 has a Universal 5424. I cruise at 2250 rpm (~80%) and make 4.8 - 5 kts at those revs. Temperature stays around 150F. Bottom is "so-so clean" (as opposed to "Oh-so clean!) at this point in the summer and the prop is a CDI 3-blade self feathering. Hope this helps.

I have the same engine. maximum RPM for me is 3000 and engine temp is 160 at that RPM. I usually cruise at 22-2400 making around 5+ knots. If you think that this is linkage issue, advance to full throttle manually at the engine and see what you get
