Motor for Typhoon

Post by Johnb »

I have recently purchased my 1st sailboat and am proud to be the owner of the '77 Typhoon, "Vahevala". Not sure where the name came from, anybody have a referenece ?? It will be sailing out of south Cape Cod with trips, hopefully, to Martha's Vineyard and maybe Cuttyhunk.

I am presently looking for an appropriate motor to supply both harbor navigation and "get of trouble" assistance if I get stuck and the weather shuts in.

I would be curious to hear from Ty owners in this area. Since I will be keeping it at a mooring, I am thinking of the Walker Bay as a possible tender. ? Can the 2 HP for the Walker be a long shaft.

What length long shaft (20" or 25") is usually best for the Ty?

Thanks as always to this board. Not sure if I could have found the Ty without your assistance.

I got my Ty last August. It came wth a 25 year old British Seagull, 2 HP. It pushed the Ty at hull speed, until it packed it in. I just bought a Honda 4 stroke 2 HP. I think it will do just fine. I wanted a 4 stroke, even though it cost more. I also wanted something simple, for my kids to use. The Seagull was too much for them. I have seen postings with at least 6 HP's on Ty's, but I would be concerned abut the weight.

John,

I have a '76 Typhoon which came with an Evinrude/Johnson 4 Yachtwin long shaft that was clogged and shot. A carb cleaning and new impeller was all that was needed to get the thing purring again. Though a bit loud for my liking, it pushes the boat along fine. I am sure you could find one of these fairly cheaply. My brother has an upscale typhoon with a newer Yamaha 4, this seems to have a bit more punch and is quite smooth. The boat can handle the weight as the stern gains buoyancy as it is dipped due to the overhang. Some have higher horsepower motors but I can hardly recommend them. My brother punched back home once through 3-4 footers on lake superior with his 4 horse and the prop did't come out. Though he got a bit wet, the motor pushed them into the wind and chop. That is good enough for me.
Good luck with your search, and enjoy your Typhoon, it truly is America's biggest little yacht!

I'm also sailing from the south side of cape with a typhoon weekender i bought in january of 98. had some motor troubles with an evinrude 4HP. have just purchased honda 5hp, 4stroke. there are some strong currents where i moor the boat and i want to be sure i can deal with that when i need to. with the evinrude i had the prop popping out of the water with more than one person on he bow. also, i had to prop the motor a bit to get the prop out of the water when it sat for the week. i hope to get my new honda before launching this season.
