JUST PURCHASED CD 25 #492

Post by randyk »

HAVE JUST PURCHASED A 1977 CD 25 IN PANAMA CITY, FLA THAT HAS BEEN SERIOUSLY NEGLECTED BY HER LAST 2 0R 3 OWNERS. SHE NEEDS ABOUT 30% OF HER TEAK REPLACED - BUT I LOVE THIS BOAT. HER DECKS ARE SOLID AND UPON PULLING THE BOAT, WE COULD FIND NO BLISTERS. THE RUDDER, HOWEVER, IS CRACKED AT THE TOP AND BEGINNING TO SEPERATE. I ASSUME THE RUDDER IS GLASS OVER WOOD AND I WILL NEED TO REPAIR THIS AFTER IT DRIES OUT. ANY SUGGESTIONS ON RUDDER REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT WOULD BE APPRECIATED. THANKS. RANDY K

Rudder Repair

Post by tartansailor »

Hi Randy,
Congratulations on the new ownership of a fine boat.
Pull the rudder, trace out a pattern, then trash all the
encapsulating plastic.
Have a welder connect the ends of the protruding pins
with 3/16" SS rod. This will lock in the fiberglass forming
the new rudder.

Hi Randy;

Congratulations on your new boat. Like you, I purchased a CD 25 which needed a lot of work, particularly on the exterior teak. Once I got into it, there were a plethora of problems, and I began a total reconstruction.

It may help you to see what I have been doing to restore the boat. I considered it an opportunity to improve the boat, but truth be told, it is a labor of love. It makes no sense financially because in a sale, I would never recoup the materials costs, much less the time and effort invested. Still, when done, I expect to have a beautiful boat to enjoy and take pride in.

You can see the progress at www.ReefRoof.com. It may give you some ideas, and a good look at the boat when stripped to the shell.

The Cape Dory 25 is a solid and well built boat with excellent design and construction. By the time I'm finished, I expect to have a renovated and improved vessel for a third of the cost of a new boat. This Cape Dory will live on for another 30 years.

Welcome to the club!
