CD30 Cutter, Beatrice, distmasted 200 east of Bermuda 27 Jun

Post by Kyheinze »

I am writing for my son Ky and his wife Hannah.
They have jury rigged a 20' mast from the remains
and are attempting to inch their way back to Bermuda, up wind.
We are looking for a CD30 mast in Bermuda.
Alternatively, can we replace with a different mast and
still have the same strength and reliability ?
Any information you could provide would be very helpful.

Thank you !

spar

If you are looking for used try Dons Marine Salvage in Clearwater Fl. Also Ebay usually has a few on it. Make sure the spar you get has specs that meet that of your spar. You can get your specs from rigrite.com. If you are looking for a new spar then Rigrite is the supplier of Spartin Spars used on Cape Dory’s. There are also several spar makers who can supply you with a spar.

Spar

This is for rigrite:

And this should be the extrusion that is on your sons boat (but it's probably wise to confirm it as best as possible).

If you replace it with something else, try and not add too much extra weight aloft (if any), but don't use a skimpier extrusion either!

You should contact Steve Hollis at Ocean Sails in St. George's, Bermuda. They are essentially the only game in town in Bermuda when it comes to sails and rigging. Steve is quite friendly and will certainly know what can be done in the Islands, or what steps to take to import repair parts. They routinely service the boats that have issues when racing and cruising to Bermuda.

Most importantly, I'm glad that your son and DIL are alright.
I would be interested in knowing what happended to cause the damage.

Also glad to head all are well on board and they are managing to make their own way to safety.

They may have lost a mast but they have definitely gained a story. They might make up the price of the rig in free beers for the telling of the ordeal.

Best of luck, Steve.

We are also curious as to what caused them to lose their mast?? Did the whole mast come down or just the top half?

Any update?

Just wondering/hoping that everyone made it back safely. I guess consider this a "bump" of sorts ;)

I just received the following message from Ky Heinze regarding "Beatrice":

"Hi! This is Ky Heinze. My wife and I were the ones who lost the mast. We were able to jury-rig half a mast after a couple of days of drifting. Then it took us nine days to get back to Bermuda with our disabled rig and the wind against us. But we made it right to the Town Cut, and Bermuda Yacht Services towed us through. We don't have an engine and the wind was right down the cut, so we couldn't get through. (Tacking was a bit complicated with the jury rig.)

We have a blog site and I put pictures and a long account of our adventures on it. If you google "ky and hannah heinze" it should come up. The boat's name is "Beatrice."

Thanks for your interest. And by the way, the Cape Dory Board has been very helpful to us over the last couple of years.

Regards,
Ky Heinze

P.S. The story is not over yet because it has been a slow process to get a mast shipped from RigRite in the US. We plan to be ready to leave Bermuda by November."

What are the laws regarding abandoned boats? Do they count as salvage? That ketch would have made quite a prize.
