Bruce snapped ALOT more photos, video too, didn't want to bore you with all of them. Here are the highlights of our cruise from St. Thomas, USVI to Falmouth, ME:

Cathy,

Great photos. Hope the trip itself was as beautiful! Those photos at Jost Van Dyke and Marina Cay bring back lotsa memories for me. Most recent are from December 2008. Thanks for posting the slideshow!!

Cathy,

Great pictures. They really caught my interest. I went through them several times. I have been to some of the places shown. Some were new to me. I'm really envious. Maybe someday.

Dismasted vessel on our route.....

Post by Cathy Monaghan »

Thought you might find this interesting.

In the twilight hours of June 5th we were about 100 nm south of Block Island, RI on our way to Maine from Bermuda when we passed a few "go fast" racing boats heading south into the gale that was had just skirted. Allen commented that they must be crazy.

A couple hours later we heard a report over the VHF that they were all participating in the Bermuda 1-2 and that one of the boats, Carbon Neutral, had been dismasted. They mentioned that the CG had been informed of his position but that he was not requesting assistance at that time. The radio relay also mentioned that he had been in contact with both SeaTow and Towboat U.S. and that both tow operators were willing to go get him but they wanted him to sign a salvage contract which he wouldn't do. The skipper of Carbon Neutral (Jay Sharkey) decided he would try to jury-rig his boat and sail back to Newport. The race participants chatted awhile regarding Carbon Neutral and her skipper never leaving Ch. 16. Then the radio was quiet.

At the 5:00 a.m. change of watch aboard Whisper (the vessel we were sailing to Maine), Bruce was relieving Allen when Bruce spotted something orange up ahead. It was Carbon Neutral. We were now about 40 nm south of Block Island.

<a href="http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c349/ ... .jpg"><img width="600" src="http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c349/ ... 1.jpg"></a>

<a href="http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c349/ ... .jpg"><img width="600" src="http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c349/ ... 3.jpg"></a>

Carbon Neutral's skipper, Jay Sharkey, had rigged the spinnaker pole as a mast and was flying his bright orange trysail. We sailed right up to him and sailed back and forth around him to talk. He only had a handheld VHF and one of the other racers had left him with a SATphone. The SATphone wasn't working very well. So we got close enough to talk. Did I mention that we had skirted a gale and it had been raining and windy all night? Anyway, the seas were still lumpy with the wind blowing about 15-20 kts at the time we met up with him and abating.

During the night both of his rudders broke off below the gudgeons and he had no engine so he couldn't steer. At one point he also went overboard. He mentioned to us that he was mildly hypothermic.

After first saying that he didn't want us to contact the USCG for him he asked us to do it anyway. So we relayed his position and status to the USCG as well as providing a description of the vessel emphasizing her bright orange trysail. The CG gave us an ETA from Montauk and we passed that on to Jay. We asked the CG if they wanted us to continue standing by Carbon Neutral until they arrived and they said they weren't asking us to. We asked Jay if he wanted us to standby and he said we didn't have to. So we reluctantly bid him good luck and continued on our way. About a half hour later we passed the USCG vessell which was on its way to Carbon Neutral. They removed him from his boat and attempted to tow the boat but she took on water and was a total loss.

Video of dismasted "Carbon Neutral"...

Post by Cathy Monaghan »

Bruce captured this video, and the stills, of Carbon Neutral during our final pass before heading for Block Island. You'll hear Allen wishing Jay good luck and letting him know that the USCG is on their way.
