I'd like to hear from folks that have added passive or active ventilation to their Ty's. I had a Nicro solar vent on my last boat and thought it rather ugly. I'm considering the "shortie" white plastic cowl vents from West Marine, one fore and aft, and wonder where people have drilled such large holes, and whether there's been any cracking of the deck as a result. Any other ideas that have worked especially well?

Re: Typhoon ventilation
Had a "shortie" myself, installed two owners ago, and I feel it did not help at all. Hardly moved any air at all. The vent was 4", just forward of the cabin and could be replaced by a cap.
The boat was always damp, and to dry it out took half a weekend. When I recored the vent hole area (due to the previous owner using caulk around the hole instead of sealing the cutout with epoxy) I filled in the hole intending to replace the vent. But now with rebedded hardware and the vent hole fixed, the boat is not damp anymore.
Still could use some ventilation, though. In reading about airflow thru the boat numerous places (I recommend the Practical Sailor articles by Nick Nickerson and the ventilation equipment tests) I have decided to cut a hole in the same place it had been and install - you guessed it - a Nico solar power vent (4"). I intend to paint it the same Pettit Off White (flattened) color as the deck, and remove it to go sailing. All I'm trying to do is to keep any condensation out from the day/night temperature cycle.
If I intended to sleep on the boat, I'd buy a Breeze Booster and install a opening hatch at least 10" X 10". Nothing else will move enough air on a summer evening.
P.S. With recore, foredeck is very strong, and will not (IMHO) crack out.

Re: Typhoon ventilation
i have had a nicro solar vent in my '76 typhoon for eight years. previous owner had installed a shortie, but i was still getting condensation ( a lot ). got the solar vent and cured the problem completely. the white plastic model has held up good to the weather and it tends to disappear into the white of the cabin deck.
Re: Typhoon ventilation
Did you have an intake port of any kind? If so, where?
My '74 has a bulkhead between the rear lazzeratte and the quarterberths. Did yours?
Thanks

Re: Typhoon ventilation
Wondering where on deck you have it mounted?
