Volvo MD7 and smoke

Post by Chris Cram »

Hi all,

Just bought a CD 30 1982 "Hesperus" with a Volvo Diesel. It smokes just a little more than I would otherwise be comfortable with. Before I have a talk with a mechanic can anyone offer insights into this problem.

p.s. NO I did not have a engine survey done. the general survey had many positive things to say about the engine except of course accesibility. It seems to run great otherwise

different color smoke means diferent things-blue generally is oil-black is carbon or soot-white is water in the exhaust or condensation-see if the engine stops smoking or smokes less once it is really warmed up-if is condensation or soot it will improve-if its oil then just watch your oil consumption-it could also be water or crap in your fuel-dont lose any sleep over it-just keep the fuel and filters clean and the motor full of oil and go sailing-good luck

my volvo smoked a little to much (black) fix was easy at least that part as there were no other problems. take the air cleaner (the older type have no throw aways) and clean numerous times with degreaser and flush with kerosine or diesel. until fluid comes out the same color has it entered filter. will increase rpms as well. you might check other threads regarding bleeding fuel system. good sailing ben
