Specs for Handy Cat Gaff rigged sail.

Post by Ann Davis »

Dear board;
I recently sold by CD25 to a good home. I am now the proud owner of a CD Handy cat - a 14' gaff-rigged cat boat. The sail is original and very stretched. I have been in touch with Hallett sails (they still make the boat and it was designed by one of the family) and they want me to send the original sail which I can do. I am concerned that the measurements will be off. I wondered if anyone had a copy of the sail specs for this boat. It has also been suggested that I take measurements on the boat itself.

Any suggestions??
Thanks
Ann

Ann,

I know very little about the CD 14--were there different rigging options?

Sailrite gives dimensions for a CD 14 mainsail, but I don't know whether or not it's the same as yours. . .

The Cape Dory Handy Cat 14 was designed by Merle Hallett of Handy Boat Service in Falmouth Foreside, ME. As a matter of fact, they now build the Handy Cat. They should be able to help you get a new sail for your Handy Cat.

Thanks for the info. I think it only came with a gaff rig so I will have to see if I can interpret the measurements at sailrite. Thanks again.

The Sail Rite measurements are for the CD-14 which is an entirely different boat with a sliding gunther rig. The Handy Cat is a much rarer boat and way cool.

Congratulations on finding one, Steve.

Hi Steve,

I see what you mean. The CD 14 is listed on this site with a picture and as you say - it is an entirely different boat. The Handy Cat was in my local boat yard (not sailed for 5 years) and buried beneath tarps. When I told the boys that I needed a boat that was easier to sail than the CD25, they put their heads together and showed me this one. I have been sailing her all season and it has been great. I am still learning the fine tuning of a gaff rig, but in general she is very forgiving and always at the dock ready to go for a sail. I appreciate all the help from the board.
