Need repower ideas / Suggestions for 30B Cutter

Post by captalex »

My Hurth HBW 50 transmission died recently and I have run across the issue of its no longer available. I am wary on buying something used and am wondering if anyone has repowered a 30 with a straight drive (I have the M18)without undertaking massive rebedding and changing of the engine mount locations! I am even thinking of just putting an outboard kicker on the stern for this season!!!! Any ideas would be appreciated!

With the odd mounting on the M-18 whatever engine you should choose, the beds will have to be re-done. Even Westerbeke/Universals newer engines don't have that arrangement.
At the least new stringers (Stainless angle iron) attached to the old beds in place have been successful in placing a new engine into the correct position.
Quite do-able and not all that difficult.
My Bias being a Beta-Marine dealer would be the Beta 16 or the Beta 20 with the TMC 40 transmission with a 2:1 gear ratio. You should be able to re-use your existing prop (RH) with a minor pitch adjustment.
I have the Beta 20 in my CD30.
Keep us posted.

Have you checked to see if it can be rebuilt?

Unless something has changed recently rebuild kits were available last time I checked.

I have a Beta 20 with a Maxi-prop on my CD31. Works fine and I can get parts at the local tractor supply house.
