I have been informed by a marine surveyor that the CD28 is not a suitable offshore boat without making extensive modifications. Would anybody with offshore passage-making experience with the CD28 care to comment on this by outlining modifications if they are necessary ?

Re: CD28 Offshore Capable
What kind of "extensive modifications" is he talking about? Anyone going offshore in any kind of boat needs an autopilot, a dodger, a windlass and adequate groundtackle, and a GPS. A self steering windvane is really nice, so are roller furling head sails, and either a wind generator or solar panels, and a propane stove with an oven. I wouldn't call those "modifications" but additions of gear. Was he talking about actually modifying the structure of the boat in some way? If so, that does not compute. We need more details.Ken Spenceley wrote: I have been informed by a marine surveyor that the CD28 is not a suitable offshore boat without making extensive modifications. Re: CD28 Offshore Capable
Ken,
I have a friend who singlehanded from Maryland to Florida to Maine to Bermuda and back to Maryland in his CD28. I don't think that he had to make major upgrades to his boat. His CD28 was knocked down during a trip from Florida to Venezuela in a very nasty storm. The rig was damaged so he returned to Florida where it was repaired before he continued cruising. Anyway, the CD28 is a solid, sturdy, seaworthy little boat. Even with a damaged rig she made it back to port to continue on.
As mentioned in a previous post, Armond Perretta has sailed his CD28, Kerry Deare, from Barnegat, NJ to Bermuda, Maine, Nova Scotia and Cuba. Check out his website at <a href="http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Side ... e/8620/</a> for some excellent info on the boat, the planning, and the trips.
Also, John Churchill singlehanded his CD26 to Bermuda. He experienced a gale on his way to Bermuda. He's a frequent visitor to this website. Hopefully he'll share his experiences with you as well.

Re: CD28 Offshore Capable
Not to sure what the surveyor means with "extensive modification" my cape dory 28 has been * every where*, from St Thomas BVI, ( was used as a charter) and all up and down the east coast. Florida/ New York, the frist owners took her Anywhere, there little hearts wanted to go. I was lucky and got to purchase "Blue Bird" a year ago, and funny thing, there is nothing extensive about her, vhf, knt/wind/dept/ , She is about as plain Jane as they come. I would say #274 is very much the way she came out the first splash back in 1980. Not saying that I wont do anything to get some "things" before I take off, But in the right hands, Im sure any Cape Dory will make any blue water dream come true. I like what the old salt walking the docks told me, "you have one hell of great chance to really do some cruising, I look over at the sloop next to me asked Jim if he knew who the man was, said jus some guy from Pacific Sea Craft: 'well now,
