To answer your question for yourself, you should rent the movie "Lifeboat" if at all possible.

In 1944, Alfred Hitchcock directed this movie with only about 7 or maybe 8 actors(esses) in it. The entire hour and a half movie was shot in a survival-at-sea type lifeboat.

The action filled movie pertained to suvivors of a ship that was torpedoed by a Nazi U-boat. That's as much as I'm going to tell you about this unforgettable classic of wartime WWII. You'll see.

Do you mean to say that, not only do guns kill people but they shoot holes in peoples boats also? I keep my guns in a safe ever since I herd on the news that guns were killing people. To think that it might have climbed out of the nightstand and shot me when I was sleeping scared the crap out of me.

Now its story time.

You and I are sailing to Belize in our own boats. We are anchored off of the coast of Mexico for the night. We heard that drug dealers were taking out their frustrations out on sailors, over the wall Americans built on the boarder. Since there was a one in 10000 chance of becoming victims we decided to risk it.

I am a heavy sleeper so I did not hear the commotion or see the flash from the flair. While I was dreaming of sandy beaches you were fighting for your life with Pedro and Juan as Lupe lay in the floor of there skiff with a burnt chest.

I awoke when they started to climb onto my boat. I knew it was bad news when I noticed Juan wearing your, I love NY tee shirt. After it promised it would not shoot a hole in my boat, I pulled out the trusty 45. As I aimed it between his eyes, Pedro said to me “it’s cool man, I just come over hear to check on you . Some crazy Yankee is shooting people with a flare gunâ€

For me this is a simple question. i would not go anywhere that I needed a gun.

I know of a fellow who used to backpack 7 miles into the woods alone. He was met by two drunken yahoos with an attack dog. The dog was inhis face and he asked the owners to contain the animal... "hahahaha... are you afraid of my doggy?"... pull your dog back please... "hahahaha why don't you make me"

The yahoos took a couple steps toward my friend, he reclicked the gun and said "DON'T"

The yahoos ran away and my friend was met by the State Police when he exited the woods two days later. My friend had a permit to carry, but not conceiled...

The Yahoo victims now were trying to sue him for killing the dog and wanted $4500..."$400 for dog and $4100 for attack training.... whooops... wrong words" the judge was smarter and told the Yahoos that they got nothing, charge my friend $50 for carrying conceiled and gave him a signed application to carry conceiled.

That was in our country not far from Boston...

Just plain sad... My same friend had an issue as his 32 foot sailboat broke loose from the mooring and ended up on the beach. Two goobers were stripping his boat when he arrived... Sad to say, that same gun told them to leave everything they had stripped off the boat.

I just don't understand why people would think that stuff on your boat is theirs...

First and foremost I would avoid hot spots. I would avoid any and all military caliber weapons. Handguns are banned in most countries so they are out. Anything which has the appearance of a military weapon or any semi-auto's would be off my list. This leaves sporting caliber rifles and shotguns. I would probably go with a pump shotgun but I might consider one of the lever action Marlin guide guns which both have short barrels. I would carry no more than one box of ammunition and I would never try to hide this weapon, it would always be declared. Prudence is the better part of valor.

I read a story of a cruiser who when a boat load of thugs tried to board him with clubs and large knifes, smashed a glass jar of gas from his outboard in their boat then shot a flair into the boat and left them in flames. It worked for him. Don't know if I will carry a gun when I go cruising yet, but I have carried a 45ACP for years as a carry gun. I carry a 45 because they don't make a 46.

ever one i have known has never carried any guns at all on board there boats...

but, my best friend of mine had a hand gun beside his bed and one night they had a robber and the guy killed him and his wife and his daughter all that night in there sleep over a few hundred dollars....

he did not like boats at all, because he got sea sick ever time he went with me...

any one that carries a gun will be killed with it on board or at home....

a friend of mine in the early 70's sailed around the world in a 18' boat never carried a gun at all....

i have had friends sail the waters all over the world and nothing has ever happen to any one....

unless the person sailing in waters they should not be in at all...

i sailed the the arabian gulf for years and the only thing that happen was the army boarded our boat at the time, to check for guns...

there are countries that don't like the people to carry guns at all...

No Winthrop, it's not for a book. It's just something I've often wondered about. I've never owned a gun. I've fired a pistol once or twice, nearly blew my foot off with a shotgun I was using to start sailboat races, and fired some kind of machine gun at cadet officer boot camp about a thousand years ago, but basically I know nothing about guns or their capabilities for self defense. So I'm wondering if I'm abnormal -- which I guess I am if the majority of boat owners carry arms.

Don't know if you are abnormal or not but my guess is that you are in the majority with non-gun owning boaters, along with me. I for one think I'm normal, everyone else is crazy.

We carry a couple of cans of wasp spray onboard, which has an almost silent range of 15' + or -.

Back in 2001, when a couple of guys tried to steal our outboard motor while we were anchored in Nassau Harbour, a quick burst of wasp spray, aimed at their heads, sent them flying overboard.

Sure won't combat a AK-47, but it worked for us.

As for the gun, I don't carry one, the others are right, you've got to be prepared to kill, at a heartbeat's notice, with out remorse or hesitation.

There aren't any lions, tigers, grizzly or polar bears in CT so all of my guns stay locked up in the safe.

No one mentioned dogs as a theft deterrent or for personal protection. It would be a brave soul who could confidently walk into our house at night. They would certainly not do it undetected.

Dogs on a boat are not without problems of their own but may have more merit than a firearm. You would be unlikely to find yourself in a third world jail for having a dog aboard though.

My answer is a motion activated tape recording of a very large vicious dog barking like there's no tomorrow. No firearms and no dogs needed.

No, I think you're normal. I don't know any sailboat owners that carry arms aboard their boats, and I certainly don't -- except for the flare gun.

Cathy, I'm not sure that I understand how you can be so certain of this. I have never encountered an experienced and safety-oriented gun owner who engaged in casual conversation with strangers on subjects like self defense or home safety. If I did encounter such an individual I would be extremely wary. In fact one of the most popular "gun lobby" talking points is that concealed carry of firearms deters crime because it imposes risky uncertainties on criminals and makes them "think twice." I am not suggesting I agree or disagree with this argument, merely that I've heard it often enough to think many others do believe it.

Take a few moments to think back on how many new folks you've met on your coastal cruises over the years you've owned your sailboat, then decide how much money you are willing to wager that not a single one of them was armed.
