25D Stuff #1

This bulletin board is Awesome! Since I started reading it over 2 years ago, I learned enough to know that a Cape Dory was what I wanted, and ended up with my friend's 25D, which we had been sailing together for those same 2 years. Well, it's time for me to give back something, so here's the first installment. But lets get some definitions out of the way...

Sailing at 1 knot for 220 yards : Knot-Furlong
Drinking lite beer for 365.25 days : 1 lite year
The shortest distance between two jokes : A Straight Line

1. I had to redocument my boat, and in so doing, wanted to get a copy of the original 'Builder's Certificate'. By calling Robinhood Marine toll free (number is posted on this board) and giving them the hull number, the secretary faxed me a copy right away. She said she had copies for most Cape Dorys, so if you like your boat history, give it a try.

2. My boat (KARMA) came with a Micrologic Explorer GPS. It wasn't working (not calculating a position), so I cruised the internet looking for help. It turns out that Micrologic went out of business in May of 1999, But an electronics outfit in Florida bought all the remaining inventory, and retained the capability of upgrading the software for Y2k, End of Week Rollover, etc. For $85, they upgraded the unit and said it will now work perfectly for another 20 years. The name and address is :

Pete's Marine Electric
1710 Overseas Highway
Marathon, FL 33050
(305)743-8328

3. My boat came with an old bronze (and brass) galley sink pump. After reading all the threads on this board about rebuilding the sink pump, I was convinced I had a different one...Well, it turned out to be the top-of-the-line Fynspray galley pump ($120 from West Marine), they even had a rebuild kit for it ! It uses a leather seal inside, which can dry out, and needed replacement. To make a long story short, I disassembled the pump, and cleaned it with vinegar, and then brasso, then washed it with soap and water, and it gleamed like a jewel...searching this board's threads again for a hint at what I could lubricate it with (safe for humans), I decided on silicone grease...after looking around, I finally found a 5 oz. tube at Grainger's Supply (item 6Y762) for $8.50, and commenced to smearing it on... it worked perfectly, and so, another piece of history is now working again ! By the way, the MSDS sheets on this item said it wasn't a health hazard (inert), and the only problem they mentioned was eye irritaion, so don't put it in your eyes...

More to follow in installment #2...
