1978 CD 27
I have a perfectly good VDO Sumlog, mechanical knot meter, unfortunately the impeller (paddle wheel) is broken. A replacement part is no longer manufactured by VDO and multiple distributors state they no longer carry this vital part. If anyone has an impeller amongst the pile of old unused parts we all save, I would be more then willing to pay for the part including shipping cost to Philadelphia.

The little paddle wheel on my knotmeter used to get fouled every year even with various types of antifouling or transducer paint. It finally broke one year and I decided not to replace it again because the speed over ground, what I am primarily interested in, I read right off the GPS. I haven't missed my knotmeter in years.
I know this doesn't help you out here, but in my estimation the loss of the knotmeter, for speed concerns anyway, isn't missed because gps does it better. Speed through the water is another thing but I can't remember when I needed that, especially if you are aware of which way the tide is running in relation to the direction of your boat.

In my rush to launch I forgot to paint the paddle wheel last season. Towards the end of the season the knotmeter ceased to work. Obviously the paddle became a sort of cruise ship marine colony as I sailed them around the sound.
I remember someone telling me after removing the paddle, soak it in white vinegar for a few days and it will come out good as new. After a few days it looked like I never installed it. I also soaked the stainless steel nut that holds on the prop zinc. Wow did it come out clean.
