Sails for 1975 CD '25

Post by Peg Leous »

I "inherited" a 1975 CD 25 a couple of years ago but it had no manual, etc. I am now in need of new sails (have been using the originals). I would like to know if anyone has the mainsail and jib dimensions. We measured the actual sail foot, luff, and leach and measured the areas on the boat as well. Our measurements don't match. Also, are their any sailmakers you would recommend? We do have a contact at North Sails in Toronto who is quoting $1300 Canadian (about 850 to 900 US.) He has different measurements than ours as well.
Your help will be greatly appreciated!

I had a set of sails (main and 145% jenny) made last summer. At that time I called several sailmakers in the Detroit area. Your price is in the range I was getting. The CD 25 sail dimensions seem to be a known quantity to sailmakers. They have a book with most production sailboats listed. I took the old sails to the loft to be measured before placing the final order. I went with UK sailmakers. They made me a nice set of sails.

Peg,
Many lofts will come out and measure your boat to a fair-thee-well, Quantum, for one. The New Jersey guy even offered to come back up to CT and take the "maiden voyage" with my finished sails. Their price was middle of the pack -- the little bit of extra money was well worth it for the service,.

I took my 'original' 1981 Lee mainsail to a local sailmaker (O'Neil who is affiliated with Neil Pryde) he measured and the sail luff was about 3" shorter than the rig database. I was quoted $1160(US) for 7.2 oz cloth , insignia, two reef points. For the same configuration I went back to Lee and got a quote for $720 (US). North Sails qouted about $1250 (US). Frankly I am going back to Lee with 7oz cloth as I believe the cost differential between North Sails and the Lee sails isn't warrented on my type of sailing. Proper care and the fact that 7 oz cloth will last quite a while.

Hi
I had a jib made for my CD25. Purchased a CDI roller furler at the same time. I highly reccomend this because then you can order a large jib with a full belly which will help in light wind. Furling is really easy and in Lake Erie it is often necessary on short notice.
As for a main, I do not know if all mains were loose footed, but mine is and is is much faster than those which travel inside the boom. Again, the loose footed main will assist in light air and is easily adjustable from the cockpit if you need to flatten the sail on short notice.
The prices quoted seem to be in line. You may want to check the back of Sail Magazine. Friends have purchased by mail from some of these lofts. The problem is that it would be better to have your sailmaker come to the boat because you may have a replacement boom or some other modifications.

Good Luck
