Bottom Sanding "Handy" Tool

I was down at the yard today and saw someone using a "POLE SANDER" sanding the bottom of their boat. I found out this is something drywall workers use. It's just a sanding block with a swivel (sp)
attached to a "broom" handle. I went down to home depot, got one, sanded just about the entire bottom "standing" up. use it like a cue stick. if anyone is interested the best block ( according to the worker) is 49727 88005 and the broom handle is 77089 54801. all for about $10

I've used the same system with a sanding block made out of screen material. The sanding was done wet with the residue hosed away. No dust. Worked great.

There are EPA regulations and guidelines concerning marine pollutants, like bottom paint, which are toxic. A tarp should be placed beneath the boat and the bottom paint should be removed with a vacuum sander only. The tarp should then be discarded as hazardous waste -- don't shake it out or rinse it off.

Most boat yards have vacuum sanders available for rental if you don't have you own.

Boat owners failing to comply could result in the marina operator losing his license or in large fines.

These HANDY sanders have a vacuum attached, it is part of the tool. Call Home Depot for any more details.

random orbit sanders are easy to control, give a great finish and are available with vacuum attachment. they are great for many uses from polishing to finish sanding brightwork to sanding/buffing gelcoat to major repair work. self adhesive sanding discs make it all simple.

Catherine, Please excuse me, but I suspect that your and my vehicle create more toxic waste than any sanding resude from the bottom of our boats. If there was any bottom paint left, we probably would be sailing and not sanding them on the hard.
