Where to get insurance for a CD-25 in the Boston area

Post by John Ring »

Hi,

I requested a quote from West Marine for my 25' Cape Dory. I got a quote saying if the boat was not bought in the past 15 days and has no current insurance they won't cover. Where can I get insurance for my 78 CD-25 in the Boston (Beverly) area if I haven't had it insured in the past?

John:

Try BoatUS. When I bought Remedy, our CD27, they had better rates than the brokers I contacted (many companies have a minimum premium of $500 or so).

We had some minor damage caused by another boat two seasons ago, and BoatUS was very helpful - they had the damage surveyed and assisted in our claim against the other boat's insurance company.

Any insurer might request a recent survey - BoatUS also asked us to report when we had completed the repairs suggested by the surveyor.

The best deal on boat insurance I have found anywhere is ALLSTATE. They do not have regional limits. You can cruise Maine to the Keys without a rate change. I have bought insurance from them in N.J., Georgia, North Carolina, Florida and Maryland. Needless to say a survey is required as most all companies do on older boats. I carry $70,000 hull insurance and $300,000 liability for $311 a year. If I go to the Bahamas I have to get a rider for about $100. Their policy covers you 100 miles offshore U.S. and Canada. I don't know if this is true on smaller boats as my boats have ranged from 30' to 40' and all were documented.

I just purchased a Cape Dory 28, called Boat US, and got all the insurance I needed for $228.00 a year The actual company is Fireman's
Insurance Company of Newark, New Jersey (CNA). If you try to get insurance directly from them it will be probably be double!

I got my insurance over the phone-and the only requirement was that I had to have an appraiser look at the boat-which I did when I purchased it!

Hope this helps

Hi John..

I'll give a third vote for Boat/US insurance. They insured my Montgomery 17 over the phone..just wanted hull SN and motor type and SN. Good coverage for spills and liability.

Checked later with Travellers, my then insurance on home and car, and they were twice what Boat/US was. Same with West marine, and Al Golden, the marine insurer that's on Compuserve and has ads in the boating mags.
