New Mast

Post by Richard Formica »

Hi,
This winter I puchased a new mast for my CD36. My question concerns valuation for insurance purposes. The primary cost was a new mast. The old one had electrolysis damage. I used my old hardware. I made some upgrades such as a new roller furler, awlgrip the mast and existing booms and an upgrade of my whisker pole to one with a control line.
Here's the question, should I consider this routine maintanence preserve the existing value of the boat or should I/can I increase my coverage to include the cost of the mast? If I were to sell the boat does this make it more valuable or just more appealing? With the exception of barrier coating the bottom, can any 'improvements' truly increase the value of a boat beyond the satisfaction I get from planning and executing the task? Your advice is appreciated.

i am no surveyor or expert on boat value, but i would say that correcting a defect does not increase the boats value. the furler and pole may give a slight increase. i figure any money spent on the boat is SPENT, never to be seen again. at best these things will make her easier to sell, assuming that they are maintained.
