2 HP motor on a CD 25?

2 HP motor on a CD 25?
There is a CD 25 for sale locally which has a 2 HP motor. The seller says he likes it because it is light enough to pull out of the well and store when not in use. I would appreciate any comments on the adequacy of this motor for that boat. Thank you.

I use to have a CD25 with a johnson 9.9 HP engine which was fine. A 2HP engine in my opinion would not be able to move the boat against any kind of strong wind or current, it is a lot easier to get out of the well, but would not be very safe in trying to control the boat once the wind filled in.

Depends on which 2 HP motor; a 4 stroke would probably do a fine job. Also depends on the type of sailing you'll do. If the motor is just to kick you out of the marina - no problem. If you want to power against wind and current, then it's a different story. Despite any comments to the contrary, anything over 5-6 HP on the CD25 is overkill. It's a sailboat, sail it. Good luck.Rick wrote: There is a CD 25 for sale locally which has a 2 HP motor. The seller says he likes it because it is light enough to pull out of the well and store when not in use. We have a Suzuki 6hp and a 2hp. Both do just fine. The 2hp will move the boat, but in strong current you may want to make a sail plan that brings you home easily. If you like the boat get it. One of the many joys CD25 ownership is you can shop around for an engine. Nothing more than a 6hp is required in my opinion. I would recommend serious consideration toward the Honda 5hp 4 stroke. Again, if the boat is in good shape and you like it get it. When Carol & I feel lazy we sail in and out of the slip. The engine can be dealt with at your leasure.Rick wrote: There is a CD 25 for sale locally which has a 2 HP motor. As others have written to you, this motor may be able to get you in and out of your marina slip if the slip is reasonably well sheltered from the wind. I can tell from my personal experience, that there is one situation you will have to deal with. If you sail in exposed bodies of water such as the Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic, Pacific, Tampa Bay, Lower Chesapeak Bay you may find yourself a few hours from shelter one day with winds approaching 30-40 knots. You and your boat should be able to handle the waves that will go with this wind. However, some people are not comfortable sailing under these conditions and prefer to get the sails down and motor for shelter. If you have to motor anywhere near the eye of the wind, your 2 horse will not be able to hold the bow steady into the wind, and your CD25 will likely keep falling off the wind and heading the wrong direction, even though you may be making forward progress. The simple solution here is to reef to a second set of reef points on your main, and a small headsail such as a furled and secured roller jib. This is no problem, but if you are not comfortable with this, then I would recommend replacing the 2 horse with a new 4 or 5 horse.
Have fun, and good luck with the decision!

When the urge to run becomes overpowering, you'll need 2000 hp. not 2 or 6. You're on the right path, but go farther. Get a storm trysail. Having crossed the Gulf of Mexico, sailed Tampa Bay, the Gulf Stream, a bit of the Atlantic and lots of other places on my CD25 in gale conditions and worse, having the right sails for the job is critical. It is a displacement sailboat, with speed limitations.
