Typhoon Spinnaker Recommendation

Post by Jeff Burke »

Any recommendations for what type and brand of spinnaker for a Typhoon Daysailer? I'd like to get something that would be easy to sail.

Thanks,
Jeff

Ty spinnaker

Post by Anthony P. Jeske »

Hi Jeff:
An asymmetrical, or cruising spinnaker is easier to set, control and douse than a symmetrical. With an ATM Chute Scoop, hoisting and dousing is a snap and can even be done single handed.
An asym doesn't need a pole or all the associated rigging, i.e. topping lift and guy.
All you'll need to add is a separate halyard for the spinnaker, turning blocks at your stern for the sheets and a tack line.
The spinnaker halyard uses a block at the masthead, which is attached to a spinnaker bail. You should be able to find the Ty spinnaker bail on the Rig-Rite website.
Good Luck,
Tony Jeske

Hi Tony,

If you go with an asymmetrical, and have a push-pit, may I suggest just using snatch blocks attached to forward struts? That's what I did with Babette many years ago for the mast-head drifter I had made for her. I never used a snuffer, just launched and doused from the cockpit, even single-handed. There's an old post somewhere on the board that also has the dimensions and verbiage about the control lines I used. Unfortunately, I have not been able to locate the only photo I ever had of her with the main, 155% and the drifter set! (Must be on one of my older computers somewhere...)

I found Michael's old posting:
http://www.capedory.org/board/viewtopic ... +spinnaker

"the luff was 23' the leech was 20' and the foot was 11.5' "

I "googled" Asymmetrical spinnaker and found the following links that are interesting:

Asym Spinnaker

Post by shavdog »

Jeff...After gettting my lunch handed to me going downwind without a spinnaker....

Take a look on the internet an try and find one...I found one in ohio at a boat yard and I also saw them on ebay..have in mind what size you want then hunt...I paid 425 for mine, it was used only once or twice...The one I bought is 22'9x21'4x11'9...I don't think I would go out and spend alot of money for a new one because theres always a chance you won't use it like you think you might...I would get a asm vs traditional just for ease of use

I just got my cd 22 home and was going thre the sails and opened one bag and theres a all but brand new spinnaker and a chute...thats what happens..people buy these things and in the end most probably dont use them...

anyway..have fun...thats what its all about...craig

Typhoon spinnaker

I meant in the last: a Weekender is a fractional rig...so was the mast designed for use of a masthead spinnaker ?

My last Typhoon (weekender) came with a chute and all the rigging. I only used it once as it was more PITA than I wanted to deal with... That's why I had the masthead drifter made. Was the rig strong enough? Yes, as long as you didn't try to push the envelope too far. But, I only used it for light air.

Hi Folks,

Just stumbled upon the original print, from 1998! Can't find my checkbook after the last 3 moves this year, but I found this... go figure!
