cd 25 outboard

What do you CD 25er's do with the outboard between sails...yank it...leave it...treat it with bottom paint...or what? Any ideas?

After multiple maintenance issues with an old 9.9, I bought a 6hp 4-stroke and kept on the cabin sole. It was only used when absolutely necessary, otherwise I would sail in and out of the marina.

If you happen to be in fresh water, it may not be as big of a problem as I had.

BTW, keeping it in the cabin eliminated the lock-vs-freewheel issue...

a home-designed/built 30' boat that has an outboard in a well that has a really slick design: the outboard pivots up and a flap folds down to fill the hole, greatly reducing the turbulence created by the well.

Way cool, but it does take a long cockpit to work.

I have a 6hp Nissan. This was my first summer with the boat.

I left the motor in all summer (May-Oct). I did not use bottom paint. In September, after a couple weeks away, I noticed it was covered with a lot of growth so I took it out and cleaned off a lot of mussels.

Next year, I will use bottom paint and try a monthly cleaning.

During this past season, my inaugural season with my CD25 JAZ'D, I left my Nissan 8 HP outboard in the lazerette from June to September.
I had growth on my outboard that I had to clean off weekly,
brushing both the lower unit and Prop with a stiff deck brush on a telescoping pole. At the mooring, I found hanging over the transom worked best for me.

I did pull my outboard in August and used a cheap plastic paint scrapper and ScotchBrite pad to clean off the eco-system (mussels & such) that had taken up residence on the outboard.

I would guess that conditions at the mooring and how often between sailings would dictate how much growth and sea life developed.

My Nissan 8 HP outboard is a bit heavy to install and then pull at the start and end of each day sail.
For next season I plan to paint the lower unit with anti-foul paint as well as pulling the outboard every few weeks to do a real cleaning.

Scrub her clean the minute you pull it out or that crap turns into concrete.

Clean it quickly and the slime wipes off w/o effort.

I leave mine in. It is an older 2 cycle 9.9 hp Mariner, and it is not easy to get in or out - heavy and awkward!

This is my second full season. First season, did not do anything to motor prior to season. This year, put bottom paint on after a few barnacles started attaching the first season.

Haven't looked at it (pulled this week by Marina and pressure washed) so don't know how it looks. I know it had some vegetation, but not enough to lose sleep over in my book. ( I am a pleasure sailor/cruiser in my boat, not a racer!).....although if you got enough, it could (no pun intended!) be a real drag even for a cruiser...

I winterize with stabilized fuel and carb fogging (letting it run with the fuel line detached until it dies). Then I make sure all the barnacles are off (if any). I give it a couple coats of trilux and let it go for the winter.

That usually does the trick.

I have an old evinrude 9.9 2 cycle that is left in. Prior owner had used antifouling in past but I didn't use anything last spring, mid season a quick scrub took care of the little growth and was fine until pull out this fall. I am in freshwater. I am however planning to use antifouling next spring the outboard.

If I were in freshwater, my fouling problems would be far less trouble I believe. In our end of the sound we have enough barnacles, mussels and general 'boat beard' that many active sailors have to dive and scrub the bottom some several times a season.

Here is a shot of my outboard hanging off my CD25 last winter after powerwash and before my scrape and paint.

This is my motor after 5 months in the water (it was pressure washed however!). Very little to clean up. I used a spray on bottom paint and like the results!

Used Petit Alumaspray+ #1863 Black.

From WestMarine....

Easy to apply - did some prep in terms of making sure old barnacles and calcium buildups were gone, taped off the 'line' I didn't want the paint above and my zinc, and sprayed away!

I have had my current CD25 for 24 years in a tidal creek in Savannah. I leave my outboard in the water at least 51 week a year - it is only out twice a year when I pull it to scrape off barnacles and change the gear lube. The first 9.9 that came with the boat lasted about 11 or 12 years, and the current 6 HP Johnson has been in since about 1996 and it is running well. I have used both Alumaspray and Trilux with good results - good prep is essential. Even more important than good paint is a good anode if you leave it in salt water. I had another CD25 back before this one and I lost the prop center hub to electrolysis one day while motoring out of my slip because my anode was completely gone.

I think it depends where you sail and keep the boat. I am in Hingham, MA and have left the motor in the water for two seasons. In Hingham I really only get weed type growth on the motor (it starts to look like a bush). To counter this the first year I tried brushing it from above but this year I would just take a swim and brush it off from the water. Nice excuse for a swim and it was very easy to clean it off. I do not use anti-fouling paint.
