Well,

We finally got our Typhoon back to the house to start getting her ready to sail again. We picked her up Sunday from a gentleman's pier on a small, windey (not as in wind) river that leads to Mobile Bay. It is almost impossible to sail all the way down the river unless you have big breeze. The motor quit in the first quarter mile, so we had to sail down the river and across Mobile Bay with 2-3 kts of breeze. Needless to say it ran into the evening. Glad I brought a case of beer because it was all gone by the time we hit Fairhope.

I got her to the hoist at the local boatyard and left her that night. the next morning I brought over my trailer and cradle I had built a couple nights before. The measurements I got on the uprights were off by 10" so we had to do some quick engineering to get her on there and make the 2 mile trip back to the casa. That was a little scary.

I pulled almost everything off of her yesterday and also ground done most of the blisters (12 hours). The boat has had years of shoddy blister repairs and paint-overs, so I decided to do it all. I figure I can have the wood done, the topside and bottom paint on and get her back in the water in the next 2 weeks. I will post progress pics as they occur.

Good luck, yes there are others out there who are working on their newly aquired ty's as well. With me I don't see any blisters, just soft decks...

Now that's something I need to do some research on how to fix. I have some soft spots on my foredeck and I have noticed some compression on my cabin top as well. The plan is to get the boat sailable for now and do the glass work this winter sometime. I am getting married in November and Carrie and I are cruising the BVI's for a week, so I want to get her up back up to snuff on basic sailing before 15 Nov!

Did you post some pics/writeup on your foredeck fix somewhere on this board? I also noticed a soft aft deck area where the mainsheet blocks are mounted. I figured I would cut the whole area out and replace with wood. There are just too many things back there that aren't accesible from the inside.

some good info on core repair. Also Don Casey's books are very helpful. I have a 9 year old son who can fit in the back transom area, Very helpful (sorry, you can't borrow him!).

Here's a few pics we took last night- hoped to have had her in the water over the wknd but it looks like it will be mid-week- we have been working on her every night since we got her two weeks ago. I cut into the poop deck to gain access to the backstay thru-bolts and found delam, of course. Not sure how much I am going to get into on this repair right now. May just use her for a few weeks and then repair after the honeymoon.

O.K. now I need that son of yours! Last night I probably would have paid whatever to get access to him! What a nightmare, and I have the knuckles to prove it. I now assume that Cape Dory never had any intention of their owners needing to get back there.

Thanks- we are very excited about getting her in the water. However, the more I look, the more I find that really needs to be fixed!
