Typhoon Weekender molds
Does anyone know what happened to the molds for the Weekender ?
The history part of this site shows that a model builder (Compass) had/has them, but they do not reply.
I also called Spartan Marine...to no avail.

As far as I know, Spartan only had the molds for the CD10 which they were building as the Spartan 10. I don't think they are still building them.
Unfortunately, many of the boatbuilders that were in possession of some of the old Cape Dory molds have since gone out of business themselves. What has happened to the molds since then is anybody's guess.
Merv Hammatt of Compass Classic Yachts was the last one that I know of in possession of the molds for the hull of the Typhoon. He modified the design and was building it as the Hurricane. According to the Compass Classic Yachts web site, Merv is no longer building full-size boats and is now devoting his time to building model boats. You may want to try contacting him anyway. If you can't get through via email, try the phone number or vice versa.

Answer to my question about the molds
Merv Hammatt of Compass has just written me that "the Typhoon molds were destroyed... when I couldn't give them away".

These guys are making a real sweet remodeled Typhoon. Wood spars, gaff rig, open cockpit... hmmmm... makes one think of the golden age of sailing. ssswwwweeeeetttt...

Nauset Marine on Cape Cod had a new Typhoon for sale at the Boston Boat show some years back, but I don't know if they had an original mold.

Ty molds
Seriously, someone should build new molds based on the Ty Weekender. The idea would be to create a new boat along the lines of the new elegant daysailers. It should have a small electric inboard engine. It should be finely fitted, really elegant. I believe this could be a commercial success. However, my tastes aren't typical, so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. Never mind.

Typhoon molds
The idea of building a new Typhoon is not far-fetched except that it is speculative.
There is an operation called "Ensign Spars" in Dunedin, FL that is currently building the Alberg Ensign --- new. The base boat has been just a bit under $40,000. Singer James Taylor recently bought one and made a big "splash" in boating news with it.
That's how I came about wondering where the 'Ty molds were. A complete renovation project of a Ty at boatyard "market rates" could be fairly quickly $20k. Two men @ $75/hour for 100 hours apiece is $15, 000 -- just an example. Throw in, say, 50% in materials. Maybe an extreme example, I don't know.
BTW, I called Nauset about the molds and was told "we have no sailboats here". I also called Spartan and they sounded a little "undone" by the inquiry.

I think the Marine Restoration version is in the low $20s right off the line. Tricked out w/ all the options it may be $25.
The problem w/ designing new sailboats is that the market probably won't bear it right now. Boats are "luxury" items in economic terms, which is the last thing people want to buy in tough economic times. My gut tells me that most boat companies are struggling to stay afloat, so to speak, these days.
Re: Spartan coming undone... I had a similar experience when I was refitting my Ty. I wanted to bronze out the original aluminum hardware, and was having a little difficulty finding the right stuff. So I called Spartan to inquire if they had a "Typhoon kit" where I could purchase all the hardware at once instead of trying to put it together piecemeal. I wouldn't say the guy snapped at me, but he was very quick to remind me that the Typhoon hasn't been made in over 20 years and I'd have to make do w/ whatever happens to be on the market. I told him that I thought that the association w/ Robinhood & Vavolotis might have meant something, but he said no to that. He was polite and professional, but definitely didn't want to talk about it.
