storm jib

Post by John Neely »

After a particularly windy fall I have decided to have reef points put in my Typhoon mainsail and to order a small storm jib to keep the boat balanced. Would welcome any advice on sailmakers as well as information on what size reef(s) I should have, and what size I should make the jib. Also, is the storm jib necessary, or will I be able to get along with my working jib?

I am shopping for a new main now, and I keep hearing that the first reef should be at 10% of the "P" length or a minimum of 3'. Weekenders have a "P" of 22', so that suggests the 3' minimum from the boom.
I find a bigger headsail helps a lot in windy weather. I'll reef long before I'll take down the genny because the boat balances better. I think you should try the reefed main before spending the money on the storm jib.

I agree with Bill. Try reefed main and working jib before you buy a storm jib. When we owned our CD22, we had a storm jib off a 25' boat. Even with this larger size storm jib (and single reefed main), our CD22 was under powered in about 25kts wind.

A storm jib may not be neccessary, the Ty will sail very well in brisk winds under reefed main and working jib. If I find myself still overpowered at that point, I drop the jib and sail under reefed main alone.
