Teak dorade boxes, or the Nicro plastic/cowel combos can be purchased from any marine supplier like BOAT/US, West Marine, E&B Marine, or M&E Marine. If they don't have them in stock or they're not listed in their catalogs, they can order them for you.

Anyone ever use bronze?

Post by Chris Reinke - CD330 Inni »

Pedro - I hope you do not mind me jumping on your request but I have a similar thought. I would appreciate any comments, along with potential suppliers, regarding the replacement of my current plastic cowels with bronze or brass. Are the sizes standard and is this a good idea? The plastic cowels just look out of place on such a classic vessel as a CD.

Brass Cowl Vents

Post by Olli Wendelin »

Chris,

I installed a brass cowl vent on the cabin top of my CD30 in 1998. I used the 3" version from West Marine ( ~ $140.00). It was a direct replacement for the plastic one previously installed. It looks great and keeps with the classic lines of the vessel. They also have them in 4" sizes and in stainless steel.

I retained the plastic engine compartment vents. They are in a high traffic area just aft of the cockpit and a little more forgiving when I climb the transom ladder and stumble over them.

Chris:

Until just now I've always thought that we had bronze cowls(they sure behave like bronze). When I looked them up in the catalogs, all I found was brass. You are absolutely correct about their beauty and how much they add to the appearance of a CD. When they are bright and catch the sun, ... and when they are tarnished the cowls are in harmont with the rest of our Spartan bronze and she looks very "salty". However, if the CD330 and CD33 dorages are similarly located I have two caveats, otherwise only one, re the use of the bronze?/brass? cowls on Alosa. 1) We have the 4" diameter deck plate, ~8.5" cowl opening size and 12.5" height. The difficulty is that when I'm flying the #1 gennie (a deck sweeper) we would frequenly foul the windward sheet as it passes to leeward during a tack. Your cutter may not have this problem. Fouling never occurs when we use the low profile Nicro cowl, so the bronze is used for dress or when we are using a 110 or smaller. 2) If you favor the bright look, you can forestall the tarnishing by keeping them in a zip lock bag between uses.

They will be beautiful on Innisfail.

bronze?

Post by john churchill »

ABI used to make CAST bronze cowls, but i no longer see them in their current catalog. I have a pair that i prize aboard my new boat. They are about 9 lbs each for the 3" model and seem indestuctible. they are listed in my 1992 catalog for $248 each! OUCH. you might try looking in consignment shops. most of the sheet metal cowls are brass rather than bronze.

I hope I'm not intruding, but I just replaced my cowls with bronze and they look great. I'm waiting for them to oxidize so they blend in. The sizes are standard and I ordered them from West. They didn't cost that much more than the plastic ones and they don't get black and sticky.

Chris,

Some of the new boats come with bronze cowls, like the Pacific Seacrafts. All we have to do is find out who their supplier is (somehow I think that's easier said than done).

Paul Luke (of Luke anchors) sells cast bronze cowl vents, as well as aluminum ones. He will awlgrip the inside red (or white, or whatever) on the bronze and will awlgrip the aluminum ones in any scheme you want.

The sheet metal ones from west are brass, not bronze.

I have a pair of 3" ones on my boat and they look great, are the same height as the nicros. I just put them on this winter and don't know yet how much the ventilation will suffer from the smaller vents, but I didn't want the 4" ones because of possible sheet fouling.
