"Spirit" sails again...

Post by Ray Garcia »

After 2 years on the hard we are ready to get her hull wet. Tomorrow is launch day. The extra year was worth it. I kept finding more to do every time I finished up a project. It kind of snowballed I guess. Thanks to everyone on this board who pitched in with your insight.

She's A beauty

Ray,

Spirit is simply gorgeous. Phew, I'm tired just reading about all that you did to her while she was on the hard.

Have a great sailing season. She's an eye opener.

Ray,

Will Spirit be sailing out of Huntington Harbor?? If so I might see you on the Sound as you come out of Huntington and I head east past Lloyd Point from Oyster Bay!! I'd love to see the new Spirit!! :D

You've really got something there -- She looks absolutely beautiful. What a great sense of satisfaction from this. Please do post more pictures, I imagine the before shots offer quite a contrast.

Total disappointment, pray for rain?

Post by Ray Garcia »

I guess a flood of biblical proportion is out of the question. It would surely make it easier to get the boat launched at this moment.

Well it happened again. Originally when we bought the boat in Chestertown, MD when had ran into a snag with a transporter. He never showed up. I am now two for two. At least 2 young experienced gentlemen showed this time with a trailer. These guys knew what they were doing and I was quite impressed with the driver’s skill in positioning the trailer as best he could. The angle of the boat in the yard would not permit the trailer to pick up the boat. The trailer was too long and the truck did not have a front hitch to help position the trailer.

I am using a different transport since the original transport is a character and would not transport the boat to the north shore of Long Island. He has a front hitch on the truck that can swing the trailer into position.

I was up a 5:30 getting the mast up on the boat and packing the car. I plan on getting in touch with the original transport company and pleading my case. I'll post the outcome.

I guess I'll water the lawn today.

boat transport on LI

Post by Ron Churgin »

Hi Ray,

Beautiful job on Spirit, I would love to see it some day. I sail a CD27 out of Oceanside, Long Island. Will you be sailing on the South Shore or are you taking it to the Sound?

I am writing because I used a transporter to move my CD27 from Mt.Sinai to Brooklyn. He did a great job, was reasonably priced, and was very cooperative.

His name is Bill Kruse and his phone is 516.807.9752

Good luck with it.

Wow she is beautiful.

When you get a chance can you post pictures from the rest of your work?

It looks like our patience will pay off big dividends.

Thanks to Svensson Boat Transport they had the right trailer and at a very reasonable price. I had to remove part of our fence to get Spirit on her way.

Right after launching we took her for a 2 week shakedown/cruise to Stonington, CT. We were hoping to jump to Block Island but the tropicals 2 weeks ago kept us around the Connecticut/Rhode Island area. In the 2 weeks we were out there if I sailed a total of 4 hours it was a lot. The last 2 weeks of July were literally windless. Boat worked flawlessly minus having to replace a broken bilge pump. I still have some minor details to complete so the work continues.

Mr. Churgin - Thanks for the referral, I did speak to Bill but he was pretty busy working some other jobs. I definitely will keep him in mind for the future. Bill really was a nice man and he did remember moving your boat.

Mr. Kaplan- I would like to meet up some time soon. I have some questions I am sure you can answer. I am not sure about some of the fittings on the boom. I was out your way this past Sunday and actually took a mooring overnight since the engine seemed to have gulped some air in the fuel line. After a thorough bleeding I headed back to Huntington Monday after work. I was moored in the CA section next to another CD27! I counted at least 5 CD27's in Huntington. It might be fun to organize a "Gentlemen/Ladies Fun Race" sometime in September.

Thanks everyone.

Ray
