Boat color CD25D

Post by MCMorrissey »

Has anyone painted a CD25D any color but the original white?? My husband (tom) sincerely admires and desires dark hulled sailboats and is checking into doing ours with a black hull. I am slightly horrified. what do you say out there??

MC.... There is a dark blue CD26 for sale at our marina in Deale, MD. As with all dark hulled boats, the question becomes, how do you keep them looking nice. I understand that they show water spots, etc. unless you constantly keep up with the waxing. For me, I have enough to do just trying to keep the woodwork looking nice. Now at one time the CD26 I mentioned may have looked good right after it was painted, but either because of a mediocre paint job (this one may have been brushed) or a lack of upkeep, this boat now looks "tired." In my mind, CD's should either remain white, or if properly spray painted, kept waxed and nice. But that's just my "two cents worth."
Smooth sailing....

I'm in Florida and I've seen boats painted dark and in particular a Cheoy Lee comes to mind that was painted black and I can tell you this - IT WAS GORGEOUS! It was however sprayed with "linear polyurethane" such as Awlgrip, Interspray, Imron, and Sterling just to name a few. Keep in mind a dark hulled boat absorbs heat far more than a light colored hull. A real concern here in Florida. All the paints mentioned hold up quite well down here, yes, even the dark colors. "HOT COLORS" such as reds, oranges, yellows, pinks, etc. are the fastest faders..PERIOD. The Cheoy Lee I mentioned had a lot of brightwork to set it off just as Cape Dorys do. It had a white and beige deck and cabin house. Single part enamels don't last. Single part polyurethanes somewhat better but the linear polyurethanes are the only way to go. Hope this helps you out somewhat.
