new main sail

Post by Dan Campbell »

first of all, thanks to all the responses to my question about sources of good sail makers.I like what I hear from Schurr sails. My question now is this.I've been sailing with my boom positioned right above the mast slot. I'm not sure if that's where it's supposed to go but I like not having to worry about the boom being to low. I have a lot of tall beer drinking friends and you know the rest. How does this change the standard sail plan? Is it shorter on the luff and the leech. Any suggestions?

most boats i've been on have the boom below the slot secured with a downhaul line to the gooseneck. the slot is then open to feed the mainsail slides (slugs). when it is time to reef, if some of the slides have to slip down far enough to attach a reefing tack cringle
you won't have to mess with the boom. judging from my boat and mainsail i would guess that the luff would be shorter if the boom was to be positioned above the slot in the mast - maybe at least a foot.
